Karns High School is a public high school in the Karns community of Knox County, Tennessee administered by the Knox County School System. A growing population in western Knox County required its establishment in 1913; prior to this time, students were assigned to Central High School located several miles away in nearby Knoxville. As of the 2006-2007 academic year, attendance was recorded as about 2,200 enrolled students. Since 1995, it has educated pupils in grades 9 through 12. Currently, the school is undergoing construction to add additional classrooms, along with enlarging the cafeteria to serve the influx of new students. The mascot for Karns High School is the beaver.

[edit] A year at KHS

A school year at Karns starts in August. Some time later, during the football season, there is a special game observed by most American high schools called homecoming. At this game, students show their school spirit by participating in skits or attending the homecoming dance. Also, homecoming is a competition. In previous years, the girl who raised the most money or canned goods for charity was crowned homecoming queen.

As holidays approach, the school celebrates in its own way. One of the highlights is the special series of holiday lunches served in the cafeteria. Holiday lunches are often comprised of either turkey or ham with stuffing, mashed potatoes and gravy, and a piece of pumpkin or caramel pie. For the first time, students will celebrate the arrival of the weeklong fall break in October. Then students celebrate Thanksgiving with two and a half days free. Then the school closes for a a longer break over the winter holidays, with school usually starting about three days after New Year's Eve.

When school begins again, students start a new semester of classes. Students look forward to spring break, a week of vacation during which some students travel. Following spring break, toward the end of the school year, comes the Prom, and following that, graduation.

[edit] Karns alumni

Alumni of Karns High School have attended a large number of colleges across the United States. Students from Karns have scholarships (such as the Lottery Scholarship and others) available to them that can help them succeed.

Most Karns students do not leave Tennessee to attend colleges and universities, staying closer to home and go to the University of Tennessee or Pellissippi State.

A number of Karns students who do not attend college choose to pursue a trade, many of whom were first exposed to their career choice at Byington, which is considered vocational portion of the school.
