Karlsruhe University of Applied Sciences

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Karlsruhe University of Applied Sciences (or short "Hochschule Karlsruhe"; formerly "FH Karlsruhe") [1] is a vocational university in Karlsruhe. It is the largest university of applied sciences in the State of Baden-Württemberg offering both academic and professional higher education study programmes in engineering sciences, natural sciences, and business. Given the concentration of research centers and universities in and around Karlsruhe, the university of technology offers a wide range of courses on campus respected in the industry and academia. It is ranked among the top Universities of Applied Sciences or Fachhochschule in Germany with especially strong mechanical, electrical engineering, IT and Engineering with Business Studies programs.

The university is also home to one of Germany's most successful[citation needed] research oriented International Master of Science degree program in Sensor Systems Technology[2] that was accredited by ASIIN (German Accreditation Agency for Study Programs in Engineering, Informatics, Natural Sciences and Mathematics) [3] and awarded the Quality Seals of the Akkreditierungsrat (Foundation for the Accreditation of Study Programmes in Germany) [4] and DAAD (German Academic Exchange Service)[5].

[edit] History

The university’s roots go back to 1878 and the founding of its predecessor, the Grand Duchy College of Building. In 1971, the university became a Fachhochschule (Polytechnical University), a new type of institution for higher public education established with the specific objective of narrowing the gap between the theoretical and industrial world. The university attained its present form and was raised to the status of Hochschule (University) by the State of Baden-Württemberg.

[edit] Education and Research

At present, a wide variety of degree programs are offered, primarily in engineering fields. In 1998, the University enrolled approximately 4,500 students. In the winter semester 2004/05, the University was able to welcome more than 6,000 students, who are taught by more than 150 full-time faculty and 300 part-time faculty. Their work is supported by some 200 technical and administrative staff.

In addition to its commitment to excellence in teaching, the University has a sound research record, its five Research Institutes [6] and 12 Technology Transfer Centers [7] being an important partner for industry. As the business environment has moved toward extensive internationalization, the University has sought to reflect this in its own programs. Co-operation with partner institutions has seen the establishment of international degrees which allow students to obtain dual academic qualifications. Certificate programs in major languages are offered by the Foreign Language Institute [8]. Changes in workplace skills and the movement towards life-long learning have also led the University to become active in the area of continuing education. The University has also moved to offer bachelor’s and master’s degree programs, some taught in English, so allowing a wider spectrum of students to participate in their programs.
