Karl Probst (born 1***) was an American freelance engineer and an automotive pioneer, who is credited with the design of the Jeep in 1940. The original Jeep was created by American Bantam Car Company in Butler, Pennsylvania. The vehicle was designed for use by the U.S Army during World War II.
Probst allegedly has drafted the designs for the Jeep in 18 hours, and his designs met the specifications for the unusual weight limit of 590 kilograms.
Port Authority of Allegheny County pays homage to Karl Probst by putting his name on one or more of the city buses.
