[edit] After the crash
Karl was first introduced when Sawyer discovers him next to the cage he was entrapped in by The Others. On the 63rd day on the island, Ben forces Karl to watch brainwashing films until Sawyer and Kate are able to rescue him and return him to the main island with them. Karl was first placed here because Ben was afraid that Karl would get Alex pregnant, an event with possibly fatal consequences on the island.
During the finale of season three, Karl returns to warn the survivors of a pending raid on their camp by The Others. The survivors were anticipating this raid, however Karl was able to let them know that this would take place a day earlier than expected. While some of the survivors attempt to ambush the Others' attack, Karl travels with the rest to the radio tower.
During the fourth season, while hiding with Locke from those on the Freighter, Ben tells Karl that he, Alex, and Danielle would be safer at the Temple. While stopping for a short break, Karl is shot by a bullet that is later revealed to be that of the Freighter mercenaries.
