Karl, Prince of Anhalt-Zerbst

Karl Wilhelm of Anhalt-Zerbst (October 16, 1652 - November 3, 1718) was a German prince from the House of Ascania, Prince of Anhalt-Zerbst between 1667 and his death, and great-grandfather of King George III of Great Britain.
He was the son of John VI, Prince of Anhalt-Zerbst and Sophie Augusta, Princess of Holstein-Gottorp.
His mother ruled between 1667 and 1674 as regent for her son.
Karl Wilhelm had the castle and St-Trinitatis church built in Zerbst, which were both inaugurated in 1696.
The Prince lived many years in Jever.
Karl married in 1676 in Halle, Sophie, daughter of Duke Auguste of Saxe-Weissenfels.
They had three children :
- John August (1677-1742), his successor
- Charles Frederick (1678-1693)
- Magdalena Augusta (1679-1740), married Duke Frederick II, Duke of Saxe-Gotha-Altenburg (1676-1732) and was grandmother of George III of Great Britain.
