Karipúna' is a now extinct mixed language with Galibi vocabulary and Palikur syntax, genetically a dialect close to Island Carib and typologically of similar formation through relexification as Media Lengua. Karipúna-Island Carib was a language spoken throughout the West Indies and the Guyanas and the Garifuna language spoken by the Garifuna people is the only surviving dialect. It served as a substrate input into the French-based creole languages of these areas.
