Karin Jota

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Karin Jota and Walborg (d. after 1350), was according to legend two Swedish women appointed jurymen after the great Black Plague.

The legend say, that after the great plague had passed Sweden in 1350, and the judge of the county of Värmland reassembled the court, they where two members short; ten jurymen of the court instead of the stipulated twelve, and it was not possible to elect two new men to fill their places, as the plague had wiped out so many people. The judge therefore decided to call upon these two women, Karin Jota from Kallhyttan and Walborg from Nordmakrshyttan, to fill the places of jurymen of the court to make the number complete. They were not mere titles, but took an active part in the court, and the judge was to have had great respect for their opinion; he often asked for their advice, and often followed it.
