Karakurum International University

Karakurum International University is a university in Gilgit, Pakistan. It was established in 2002 with a charter from the Federal Government of Pakistan, with the goal of improving access to higher education for people in this remote area[1].
There are currently two faculties - Sciences, and Humanities and Social Sciences. A third faculty of Mountain Area Development Studies is still in the planning stage.
The campus, situated on University Road in Gilgit, is still under construction. However, the core facilities are complete and around 2000 students have been enrolled in 2007. A third of them are women[1].
KIU has been chartered as a multi-campus institution, however no other sites have yet been established. All the University's activities take place in Gilgit.
