The members of Kara's Flowers had been friends since attending junior high school in Los Angeles at Brentwood School when, in 1995, they formed a grunge rock band named for a girl named Kara all the band members had a crush on. On her birthday, they all gave her flowers, but she rejected all of them. They played their first gig on September 16, 1995, at the Whisky A Go-Go.

The band signed with Reprise Records and released its first and only album, The Fourth World, in the middle of 1997. Despite support slots on tours by Reel Big Fish and Goldfinger, the album failed to take off commercially. In 1999, the band parted company with Reprise Records.

They were featured very briefly on the television series Beverly Hills, 90210 as a band for the 'Peach Pit After Dark'. The appearance was during the eighth season of the TV drama, in the episode "Forgive and Forget" which first aired on September 17, 1997.

A number of bands were influenced by the band. They include:- Paramore, Fall Out Boy, Panic At The Disco and You Me At Six.
