While some info in the internet suggested Kapustin Yar as the launch site for Sputnik 1, Baikonur was the launch site according to NASA [1] Ekem 14:46, 3 November 2005 (UTC)

I just watched an interesting show on the History channel about the history of UFOs in relation to this base. If anyone can find information relating to the existence of the so called "Znamensk" secret facility under the base, I think it would be an interesting addition.
