[edit] Adoption History

Kangi, I'm transcluding our adoption history below. This way we can keep everything centralized. Use the "Edit this subpage" button to add comments, and then click the "advise xenocidic" link and follow the instructions to let me know when you make updates. Feel free to let me know if anything is unclear! xenocidic (talk) 00:36, 7 May 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Offering Adoption

Hey there! I saw your comments here and then I noticed you were still seeking adoption. Anyhow, I'm pretty active and hopefully should be answer any questions (or find the answers to the ones I can't). Let me know on my talk page if you're interested. xenocidic (talk) 01:07, 27 April 2008 (UTC)

Oh, Lord! Many, many warm thanks for your adoption offer. I sure do accept it. What's the next step?
I promise to do my best not to bother you with stupid questions… Have a nice day!
Cordially, ✓ Kanġi Oĥanko (talk) 08:50, 27 April 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Wiki-adopted

Y Done. I've changed the userbox on your page to show that you've been wikiadopted.
Please do not consider any question at all to be 'stupid', I'm here to help. Just drop by my talk page whenever you have questions or need assistance. And as for your worries,

I fear that I may unvoluntarily become a vandal
I had to come to the conclusion that anyone could spoil good articles, even with the best intentions and despite guidelines.

you need not be afraid of 'spoiling' an article. Even if you make a mistake, you can either undo it yourself, or other users will undo it for you. And a core principle of Wikipedia is assume good faith, so you will not be thought a vandal. Anyhow, I look forward to helping you with your wikicontributions! xenocidic (talk) 12:51, 27 April 2008 (UTC)

Sincere thanks for your prod… but you may feel soon how stupid my questions could be!
The first of them will come as soon as I can (I'm striving right now to have a paper put to bed before the deadline).
First of all, I'll give you details about me, what I intend to write here (though I'll probably have to stay away from some subjects, like Ukraine and Afghanistan, because of this or that, and stay away from Crimea, Chechnya / Ichkeria, Abkhazia, Georgia and 'islām, just to take a few examples, despite real knowledge of these areas And despite the fact that I am a laicist (or non-political) muslim Ukrainian — ¾ Ruthenian and ¼ Crimean tatar. ).
Bye! ✓ Kanġi Oĥanko (talk) 14:14, 27 April 2008 (UTC)
With respect to the articles you're cautious about contributing to; you just have to keep in mind that you should always contribute from a neutral point of view and ensure your additions are well-supported by reliable sources. However, if you find that you are running into conflicts due to the heated nature of certain subjects, then it might be best to find subjects that are not sources of conflict. If you ever do run into problems, ensure you don't become involved in a dispute, instead attempt to find consensus on the talk page of the article. Good luck with your paper! xenocidic (talk) 15:02, 27 April 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Adopter ⇔ Adoptee updates

I will add a period in between these brackets whenever I update the ASP ( .... ) xenocidic (talk) 13:01, 13 May 2008 (UTC)

Let me know if you need anything further, or if I missed something above.

P.S.: I changed the way you update me, now instead of adding a period, just add a bullet point and sign your name. and then when there's a new update, delete your signature and sign again. xenocidic (talk) 13:00, 13 May 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Some changes brought here

I brought some changes here to make it easier for me to retrieve subjects later…

[edit] Problem with a redirection (Kemble Airport)

Hi! I tried to move Kemble Airfield to Kemble Airport, because this is how this field is officially named by the owner, but it seems I did something wrong, as both articles are still here, while Kemble Airport alone should be here. I tried to use the help pages to fix that, but… well… I didn't understand anything, as all I tried failed. How can this be fixed now?
Sorry for that! ✓ Kanġi Oĥanko (talk) 00:41, 29 April 2008 (UTC)

No worries - It looks like after you moved it, you edited the old article (which was left behind as a redirect) and re-added all the old information. I undid it for you. The old article should remain as a redirect, do any further editing on the new article. xenocidic (talk) 00:49, 29 April 2008 (UTC)
P.S. I like what you've done with the article. It's a lot more attractive now. xenocidic (talk) 01:08, 29 April 2008 (UTC)
Many thanks again for your help, and for your appreciation. I have no merit: those guys are really nice, and that's one of the airfields I do love, not only because Delta Jets are wonderful people and extraordinary machines. In fact, I hesitated to do more, for fears it would have looked like blatant advertising.
“Miss Demeanor”

If you are interested in planes, you should try to catch this G-PSST and the guy under the helmet, Jonathon Whaley, and check there (in particular initial artwork, color scheme, final artwork) what this team achieved. I've seen this J-4104 about 6 months before she left Mollis Base, abandonned on the apron, with the Schweizer Luftwaffe wondering what they'd do with their Hawker Hunters (very few have survived). Given her striking scheme and the fact that Whaley flies from Edinburgh to Swansea and Ramsgate at every airshow he can go to, would not “Miss Demeanour” be worth an article on its own? ✓ Kanġi Oĥanko (talk) 01:34, 29 April 2008 (UTC)

Hrm, on the subject of the airplane, while it is a nice design, we would have to prove some notability... For example, how many newspaper articles have been published about the plane? I'm not sure if there would be enough substance for an article on its own, but if you think you can assert notability and provide an interesting article, you should consider working on the article in your userspace before moving it into the mainspace, just so someone doesn't tag it for deletion before you're done with it. If you think the plane meets the criteria in the link I provided above, then by all means, work on the article. xenocidic (talk) 01:41, 29 April 2008 (UTC)
Er… As many journalists, I do not read the papers! I can't tell you how many articles have been published about this plane — most of them have been local coverage and I cannot quote my own papers, according to the guidelines and honesty. But you're right. I'm not sure that the number of pilots or of simple airshow attendants can be taken into account as 'general notability'. I'd forget about it.
Goodnight! ✓ Kanġi Oĥanko (talk) 01:53, 29 April 2008 (UTC)

Nice job creating your own subpage to hold this transclusion =) xenocidic (talk) 02:48, 7 May 2008 (UTC)

Thanx for the flattering comment about this new subpage, though I'm far from satisfied with the hole. But I'd ask you later how to make it better. Hope you liked the 'communist penguin' as a personal totem…
I just wonder how I would know when there'll be something new here from you.
  • What do you mean by far from satisfied with the hole, what aren't you satisfied with...? As far as how you'll know when I update it, I'll make a small change to your main talk page whenever I update it, same as how you do for mine. xenocidic (talk) 12:56, 12 May 2008 (UTC)
Oh Lord! I meant with the whole. Nothing to do with golf… Well, about the whole user page, I would like it to be somewhat nice, and that's far from being satisfactory!
For professional work, we use professional page setup and layout softwares — good for dumbs like me, as there's nothing to do than type in our text and just define the size and place of the illustrations, simply dragging and clicking.
But here, on Wiki, we have to design tables etc, and I simply don't understand how it works.
  • I'd like to know, too, if it's possible to customize the toolbox below the edit window, as I do not need to have non-roman characters, but I would like too have –, — and other markups or templates I often need. But don't worry about that now, I'll ask you when I'll be back home. ✓ Kanġi Oĥanko (talk) 09:15, 13 May 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Stunt - picture 2: Blatant advertising?

Would you tell me whether this image:Stunt_1298471366.jpg cannot be considered as 'blatant advertising', not the least because it shows more of ads for a well-known bank in Western France and a controversial retail store and e-commerce chain than a stunt performer.

  • I wouldn't call it blatant but if you think you have better images, you are free to be bold and replace them. xenocidic (talk) 12:56, 12 May 2008 (UTC)

Because of this, the poor quality of the first picture and because some more would give a more visually informative and nicer page, I would have proposed the following (minimum) gallery — or even look for four more, showing also air and sea):

  • I think you should go ahead with this as long as the images are free to use. If there is resistance to the change then you can discuss it on the talk page. xenocidic (talk) 12:56, 12 May 2008 (UTC)
You're quite right: I'll find four more pics to cover (roughly) the range of stunts and explain on the talk page why I replaced those two poor images.
  • When I wrote it was blatant ads, that's because this region, Brittany, cause that's where my son studies, some 15 mi from Landrévarzec actually, and that's not far, too, from where my former wife lives. The Centres Leclerc can be compared to Wall★Marts at some point (e.g. because of their social and salary policies), plus a populist, gross CEO who pisses off everyone with thunderous statements and vain promises. These are facts, not personal point of views, though I dislike such persons, be they politicians or whatever else. ✓ Kanġi Oĥanko (talk) 09:15, 13 May 2008 (UTC)

Then, there's some mess with the links to 'Other languages' — when you go from the English article to the Danish one and then to the Turkish one («Bu sayfaya bağlantı veren diğer Vikipedi sayfalarına bakın» = There is no such link to any page with this title among Wikipedia articles) (while there is one in Turkish). One Czech, Danish or other language often leads to different articles in English. More precisely:

  1. Czech ➙ nil in English
  2. Danishen:Stunt performer
  3. German going back to Stunt, Stunt performer, Second unit, Special effect, Pyrotechnics and others like Cheerleading or Chroma key
  4. SpanishStunt
  5. FārsiStunt
  6. FrenchStreet stunts
  7. ItalianStunt performer
  8. JapaneseStunt
  9. BokmålStunt
  10. PortugueseDuplo
  11. Turkish«There is no such link to any page with this title among Wikipedia articles», while the Turkish “Dublör (sinema)” gets back to Stunt.

How can this be fixed?

  • Hrm, the other languages thing...I'm not too familiar with it. But I do know that the inter-language links are done as follows:
en:Stunt performer.
As far as why some of the links go to "Stunt" , that is probably because the other languages do not have an article for "Stunt performer" and this is the closest article they could get to... again, I'm not sure what the policy is. So that is why going backwards and forwards with the language links might have strange results. Anyhow, if yo uknow these other languages, then feel free to improve the interlanguage links-- if you can! xenocidic (talk) 12:56, 12 May 2008 (UTC)
  • If I try to improve the interlanguage links, I fear I'll be considered a vandal (as I do not intend to create an account on each version), but I'll correct the gross Duplo link (from the Portuguese Wiki), add a link from the Czech and Turkish versions — or is there any accredited administrator to do that job? ✓ Kanġi Oĥanko (talk) 09:15, 13 May 2008 (UTC)
  • As long as your edits are in good faith you likely won't be considered a vandal. xenocidic (talk) 13:00, 13 May 2008 (UTC)

Nice work! xenocidic (talk) 13:00, 13 May 2008 (UTC)

[edit] IJmuiden

Hi! I'm back home. Could you please take a look at the IJmuiden's talk page (about the concerns I expressed about copy-pasted text — sometimes word for word — from this website (the text under their map). Thanks to you! ✓ Kanġi Oĥanko (talk) 11:30, 24 May 2008 (UTC)

Welcome back! In concerns like this, there's a few things you need to look for. The first would be any indication that the source may have released the text into the public domain or if it is indeed copyrighted with all rights reserved (I'm having trouble determining this because .co.uk is firewalled from work and I'm looking at the webpage through a proxy). The second would be to ensure that it was Wikipedia that copied the text from the website, and not the other way around. Looking at this edit, we can be almost certain that the IP user did a copy and paste from the website (otherwise the text would have gradually evolved into this form). So, I think we've determined that it's most likely copyright violation. Now there's a number of options, you could email the owner of the website and ask for permission to use the text, or you could paraphrase the text and use the website as a reference. Or you could of course just remove the text altogether, but this is a less than optimal course of action. Let me know if anything needs further clarification. xenocidic ( talk ¿ review ) 13:25, 24 May 2008 (UTC)
➨ I got no answer yet from the webmaster… ✓ Kanġi Oĥanko (talk) 16:09, 30 May 2008 (UTC)
Well, I've just added a comparison table to my message on the talk page after I read your message — actually, your message and my edit were sent at the same time —, this will allow… some comparison. I do agree with you when you write «it's most likely copyright violation». I wouldn't be satisfied with the third option, but I'm not sure we'll be granted permission to use their text Though the initial author and our 70.106.99.150 (who only wrote about IJmuiden) could be the same person, but I seriously have some doubts about it., at least because it may have been written by some reclamebureau / agence de communication. And if this text comes from the company itself, they would agree indeed, but then this would be some kind of advertising (and the inhab. figures are false).
I reworked a bit the existing text, pending translation from Dutch and other versions and some more research, when I'll have some more time…
Oh! Yet something else: What do «.co.uk is firewalled from work» and «looking at the webpage through a proxy»? And what does the ¿ between talk and review in your signature mean? Remember, I'm a real HTML-dumb… ✓ Kanġi Oĥanko (talk) 14:21, 24 May 2008 (UTC)
Firewall means that my work blocks access to websites ending in co.uk. Looking through a proxy means I used a website (http://www.stealthfinder.com) to get around this (but it doesn't work very well). We can still use the text, paraphrased, if we link to the website as a reference. The upside down question mark is just a seperator between the two links, it doesn't mean anything, just a neat symbol =). xenocidic ( talk ¿ review ) 14:27, 24 May 2008 (UTC)

[edit] „Kök Bayraq“ (Crimean Tatar flag)

Could you please take some time to make clear to me the reason(s) why the sole traditional Crimean Tatar flag () has been removed by CommonsDelinker and Zscout370 from all pages sporting the flag on every Wikipedia version, including mine, without any consent from me? What's more, I believed one user did not have the right to edit another user's page
I do not understand their reasons, and they do not seem to understand Crimean realities, at one more difficult time for us, Ukrainians and Tatars, when Russian proeminent figures — both inside and outside Russia — are vocal Here is a soft (reworded) example of that kind of daily statements (in English, by the Russian РИА Новости ). in claiming that Sevastopol’ and even Crimea and the whole nine yards «should be given back to Russia» (some weird, romantic idea of new-New Russia may be more appropriate), as if nothing happened in the meantime:

The Kök bayraq (Blue Banner in Cr. Tatar) or Qırımtatar bayrağı (Flag of the Crimean Tatars) is the flag you can see at the upper left side of the Bizim Qırım home page and on other Crimean Tatar websites, and this the only one Crimean Tatars do really use for many reasons — among which:

Then, “curiously enough” (ain't it?), the Qazan Tatar version of the English article does not show the and the Crimean tatar version of the same article does only display the Kök Bayraq.
I am sorry to deliver such a long plea which could seem insignificant from the other side of the Ocean, but this is important for me. I stay apart from ALL the pages where some people make unbalanced edits, in spite of what I could write (as a direct witness or as a result of editing reports made by colleagues), but I would very much like to understand this kind of behaviors. Unless I am wrong, because I did not understand these edits… ✓ Kanġi Oĥanko (talk) 15:15, 30 May 2008 (UTC)

➨ How and where could I find what's the status of this image? Apart from the fact that this site has a © mark up on their page, local Tatar papers and International, non-Tatar organisations, NGOs like Bizim Qırım and others use it, without any mention of copyrights. ✓ Kanġi Oĥanko (talk) 16:09, 30 May 2008 (UTC)
Is this an accurate/appropriate substitute? Image:Flag_of_the_Crimean_Tatar_people.PNG xenocidic (talk) 18:17, 30 May 2008 (UTC)
Oh dear! It's better than a appropriate substitute, cause this is exactly the same: the “Flag of the Crimean Tatar people” is precisely the „Kök bayraq“, that's only another name for the same flag!
Now the question is: will it be deleted, too, for the same reasons?
In the meantime, I put this image on my userpage, the Flag of Crimea, Autonomous Republic of Crimea and Crimean Tatars articles (kinda revert of the deletion by Zscout370 and CommonsDelinker? Hope not). Wish they remained without a new deletion…
Many, many warm thanks to you! ✓ Kanġi Oĥanko (talk) 14:48, 31 May 2008 (UTC)
Excellent! I'm glad we were able to work that out! And no, it is not inappropriate to fix the instances where Zscout and the Delinker removed the image, this is as this is an appropriate replacement. As this particular version of the flag image has both proper source and proper licensing, I don't think we will have a problem with it being deleted, which was why the previous one was. xenocidic (talk) 15:48, 31 May 2008 (UTC)
  • One last thing I forgot to address in your question was regarding others editing your userpage. Keep in mind that no one "owns" anything on Wikipedia - userpages included. See Wikipedia:Userpage#Ownership and editing of pages in the user space. While it's polite to inform or ask a user about making a change to the userpage, these edits we're talking about were done by bots to delink an image that was deleted as is routine when this happens. xenocidic (talk) 15:41, 30 May 2008 (UTC)

[edit] m or M edit?

How can I decide if an edit is a minor or an important one? I must admit I'm not always sure whether what I'm doing is minor or not. For example, is the addition of an external link a major edit? ✓ Kanġi Oĥanko (talk) 15:15, 30 May 2008 (UTC)

Addition of external links should probably be left as a "normal" edit. Minor edits would involve minor corrections to spelling or grammar, punctuation, perhaps adding a forgotten signature, etc. More examples can be found here. xenocidic (talk) 15:34, 30 May 2008 (UTC)
➨ OK! ✓ Kanġi Oĥanko (talk) 16:09, 30 May 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Those TOOLS I do need

[edit] Toolbox

Hi, proud Dad of this beautiful Ayden No kidding here, really !

  • Thank you =) He's getting pretty mischievous these days, though! =) xenocidic (talk) 15:34, 30 May 2008 (UTC)

As I'd better ask about them one by one, here is the first of a (long) series of questions about 'technical enigmas' (for me…): how can I customize the “toolbox” we have just below the edit window. I do not need Cyrillic, Greek and IPA scripts and most of the Latin letters (I have non-virtual keyboards for this), but need e.g. mkhedruli alphabet and, most of all, those </br>, <small></small> and others.
Furthermore, is it possible to add to this toolbox templates and some infoboxes I often use?
Have a nice day! ✓ Kanġi Oĥanko (talk) 15:15, 30 May 2008 (UTC)

  • On this one again, I have no idea. I would gather perhaps there might be some playing around you could do in your monobook.js with adding scripts and stuff. I would suggest you ask this question at the Village pump (technical) help desk of Wikipedia. As far as the infoboxes, you can see what I've done here with various infoboxes I use often, for easy cutting and pasting purposes. xenocidic (talk) 15:34, 30 May 2008 (UTC)
Y Done. I've asked the Village pump (technical) help desk.
➨ Er… What's a monobook.js and how does it work (if it's meant to work)?
Monobook is where we can add scripts and such to our Wikipedia experience. See Wikipedia:WikiProject User scripts. xenocidic (talk) 18:17, 30 May 2008 (UTC)
➨ Uh? It'll take some time before I can understand how your infoboxes (and others, by the way) work, too… So dumb! ✓ Kanġi Oĥanko (talk) 16:09, 30 May 2008 (UTC)
The freqtext is fairly easy. You type the most commonly used code you will be using onto a page and wrap it with <pre> </pre> tags so that Wikipedia doesn't render it as the code, but shows the code itself. Let me know if you need this explained further. =) xenocidic (talk) 18:17, 30 May 2008 (UTC)
I am really sorry to wear your patience… I don't even know what a freqtext is, where you find it, and where you type which kind of codes… ✓ Kanġi Oĥanko (talk) 14:48, 31 May 2008 (UTC)
No, not at all, I was unclear. I have a page called User:Xenocidic/freqtext which is a where I keep all my frequently used text, which I then transclude on my main page. In the very basic form, you would just create a page (or you could even type this text onto your main user page) as follows:

<pre>

(here is where you would paste the frequently used text you want to access, I'll just use a ref template for an example)

</pre>

I hope that is more clear. Basically when you use a <pre>, it tells Wikipedia to ignore whatever Wikipedia and HTML code may be between the two tags (<pre> and </pre>) so that you can then use it to copy-paste it when you are frequently using it. Make more sense? P.S. I replied to your email. xenocidic (talk) 15:48, 31 May 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Should've done that?

Just passing bye and trying to forget technical problems we have here and endless, heavy video edits playing on my nerves and getting sleep deprived…
Well!

  1. A colleague of mine have found that Ivan Korenyuk still had an account, though he died eight months ago. Shouldn't his account be closed?
  2. I gave answers to Epson291 and Orangemike who asked him two questions about Hebrew alphabet and WE Youth Political organization, respectively. Was it the right thing to do, or should I have to let things remain unanswered?
Now, get back to my job… Cheers! ✓ Kanġi Oĥanko (talk) 15:12, 5 June 2008 (UTC)
OK, thx - still in a hurry… ✓ Kanġi Oĥanko (talk) 18:41, 5 June 2008 (UTC)
It's ok to answer questions on others talk pages. I do this often for users who have become inactive. As for whether his account should be closed... I'm not quite sure. Seems we're both busy with work! Must get back to it... xenocidic (talk) 15:23, 5 June 2008 (UTC)

[edit] So happy…

I'm really happy to see you've been accepted. I'm really, really busy right now. Must quit!
By the way, it's easier for me to mail for the moment. Sorry! Cheers ✓ Kanġi Oĥanko (talk) 14:18, 4 June 2008 (UTC)

Thanks Kangi. Email is fine, but my response will usually be delayed. Have to run out for a bit. Sounds like you're really busy, good luck with all that! xenocidic (talk) 14:30, 4 June 2008 (UTC)
