[edit] The Kanyakubja Story

There are two versions of the Kanyakubja story that I have heard. We can put up either one or both: 1. When Rama returned to Ayodhya after the slaying of Ravana, who was a Brahmin himself, he had to perform yagnas to seek forgiveness for killing a Brahmin (Brahm-hatya). Upon the performance of the yagnas, the Brahmins who refused to grant forgiveness have been known as Kanyakubja Brahmins (and were supposedly known for their hot tempers).

2. More recently, the Brahmins running away from Moghul persecution who crossed the Saryu (Sutlej?) river came to be known as Saryupaari Brahmins and most others came to be known as Kanyakubja.

Also, it can be added that just as the Bhumihars, Iyers and Namboothiri (to name a few) claim to descend from sage Parshurama, Kanyakubja claim to descend from sage Bharadwaaj. Nshuks7 23:25, 12 November 2007 (UTC)
