[edit] Edit for adding Aditya Kumar Tiwari

Hi,

An IPP address for IIT Kanpur has edited the article Kanpur and added a famous personality Aditya Kumar Tiwari which is not known to old Kanpurites. I found user:Adityakt in wikipedia user list who is a freshman at your institute.

This is to advice that Wikipedia is serious knowledge. Please dont put inappropriate links.

[edit] Hindi Creeping in, Mutiny, not indepedence war

This is the English wikipedia. Someone should ammend the map to read Kanpur in English only, and not Hindi. Furthermore, I suspect we should call the war of 1857 what it is: a mutiny. Common knowledge dictates that the occurrences of 1857 were not a "war of independence". ~ kamil choudhury

Hi Kamil, It is not "Hindi creeping in" as you have tried to suggest. These are the names in local scripts. It is NOT just Hindi, if you could see and understand, there is Urdu label also. Furthermore, if you are really interested in knowing what the MUTINY or WAR should be called, please go through the relevant "article" or its "Talk" and join the debate there.

Hi all, wouldn't it be best if we just called it the "Indian Mutiny/War of Independence"? Also I think it would be good if we called the city Cawnpore for everything relating before 1949. After that we can call it Kanpur. Otherwise it'd be like the article on Roman Londinium - constantly referred to as London!

[edit] Kanpur Co-ordinates

Hi, The Co-Ordinates mentioned for Kanpur are pretty out of place. They Should ideally be near/around: Latitude: 26°27'28.19"N Longitude: 80°19'4.29"E I have used Google Earth to verify the same. If some one has the exact co-ordiante, then p.s. change the ones mentioned in WikiPedia. Thanks, Bharat

Thanks Bharat. I updated whatever I could, as I also do not know on that template.

Hi Bobby, Thanks for the update.

Also, if i may suggest, there should be some set-parameters for listing of school & colleges, or all together a separate sub-section. Else, the list will be never ending and diverts you from basic content on Main Page. Same suggestion for 'Famous Personalities' Regards, Bharat

Hi Bharat, Thats the way any page would eventually evolve, but the length is still within set standards so we should not bother. Actually, there is a Category:Education_in_Kanpur that should definitely be added under the pages describing each individual institute. At some later stage, we would definitely make out from the descriptions (or from other editors who are in touch with real Kanpur; and we can remove proxy advertisements of private single-room schools. Same would eventually apply for personalities, but personalities are a lot easier to filter. Eventually, you relate all through categories. We can make a Category:Personalities_of_Kanpur when the list grows too long and remove them from original page leaving only a link to personalities. My thoughts, but I think not many are editing Kanpur anyways.

[edit] 2006th Asian's Seventh most polluted city

Kanpur city is 7th most polluted city of Asia.

Sorry I had to update your comments. Talk page does give you the liberty, but not beyond a limit, you still cannot be offensive to millions staying in the same city. By your language, it appears you also have roots there. May I ask what you have done to improve the situation (besides saying shers while getting drunk next to a gutter, if you insist on so)!

Apologies for being a bit rude, though I dont stay there any more. I am sure I have seen even worse places in world.

[edit] Historical landmark : Boodha Bargad

Kanpur has a had a much glorious past which needs a mention. Kanpur having a strategic position close to jhansi and being a hub of military establishment had a bigger involvement in India's first war of independece. The inhumane treatment of Indians by General James O'Neil at Allahabad and Banaras invited the wrath of the crowd on the English which escalated into a massacre of innocents which was sad. Nana Sahib, Tantia Tope, Jwala Prasad and Azimullah Khan were the gallant fighters who spearheaded the revolt of 1857. The Boodha Bargad (Banyan Tree) at Nanarao Park is a symbol of the sacrifices of our freedon fighters with 144 of them hanged on the very tree. I hope these more serious facts could get a mention in the article rather instances like Murray company is conveniently pronounced 'Mari' which bears no relevance to the cities past, present or future. --Abhinavmishraa 12:49, 29 March 2007 (UTC)

Hi Abhinav, This is an article about Kanpur, not about 1857. If you go to that one, you will find a HUGE section on Kanpur. Please check Indian_Rebellion_of_1857. Another thing, even the Mari company is a fact, as much as Boodha Bargad is... Please check Other Attractions in the article. I have put the banyan tree there. You can add other headers also if you feel so, and start populating it. Who has stopped you?

[edit] Population and Area in infobox

I have edited the population density as per 2001 census report. http://www.upgov.nic.in/upinfo/census01/cen01-7.htm But the area is coming out to be some 3000 sq.km. Something is terribly wrong some where. I have no idea what is the total area of Kanpur Nagar District (Not just the urban town area). Please seek some valid source and put the correct data.

PS: The last edit was made by me, and I was accidentally logged out of wikipedia while editing.
