Kansk (Russian: Канск) is a town on the left bank of Kan River in Krasnoyarsk Krai, Russia. Population: 103,000 (2002 Census);[1] 109,607 (1989 Census).[2] It is home to Kansk air base and is crossed by the Trans-Siberian railroad.
Founded in 1640 as a Russian fort, it is a centre of the Kansk-Achinsk lignite basin, which in the early 1980s was developed into one of the largest coal areas of the Soviet Union. It also has cotton, timber hydrolysis, and food industries.
