Kansas City Southern de México (KCSM), formerly Transportación Ferroviaria Mexicana (Mexican Rail Transportation), is the name of a company dedicated to freight transportation using rail in the North Eastern part of Mexico. KCSM owns its own fleet and the "right of use" of some of the railtracks in the country, being the most important the "Ferrocarril del Noreste" (Northeasthern railtrack) line. This line links the center of the country with cities like Monterrey, Nuevo Laredo, Matamoros and Reynosa, on the border with the United States, which makes it an important piece of transportation infrastructure for the North American Free Trade Agreement.
This company was created by Transportación Marítima Mexicana (Mexican Sea Transportation), when in the mid-1990s, President Ernesto Zedillo proposed the privatisation of the Mexican railways. Since the late 1930s, Mexican trains and railtracks were property of the government (as Ferrocarriles Nacionales de México, Mexican National Railways), and this condition made passenger trains very popular, and these services were the priority instead of freight services, as travel between cities was very cheap. It is said that, due to the pressures created by the NAFTA, passenger trains have disappeared, and freight trains have considerably increased.
In the mid-2000s, a large part of stock of TFM has been bought by the Kansas City Southern Railway. Also, this company has been involved in a legal action, as KCS is claiming for a tax devolution, valued in 10 billion pesos, resulting from an unclear condition in the sale of the Northeastern Railway.
In December 2005, Kansas City Southern Industries renamed the railroad to Kansas City Southern de México, S.A. de C.V.[1]
