Kanitkar

Kanitkar is one of the many last names used a certain subcaste of brahmins in India. This subcaste is called Konkanastha Chitapavan.

Kanitkars as most of the konkanastha chitpavan brahmins originate in the konkan strip located on western seacoast of India about 300-500 miles south of Mumbai. However, Kanitkars have now migrated to almost all the corners of the world.

A large majority of Kanitkars still live in city of Pune in maharashtra state of India, but there are instances of Kanitkars in cities of Baroda, Mumbai and many others. Many Kanitkars have also visited foreign countries and settled there and are living there.

There is a book named "Kanitkar Kul Vrutanta", which has the names of all the kanitkars known till date, information about each of them, as much as is available. The latest edition of the book known was somewhere around 1986. It mentioned that there are around 950 Kanitkars living in various parts of the world. Madhav Kanitkar is a noted Marathi playwright and writer.
