Kangan Batman TAFE is Victoria, Australia's major training provider for the automotive, aerospace, polymer and transport industries and is one of the state’s largest providers of traineeship and apprenticeship training.
Kangan Batman TAFE is a flexible and innovative place of learning, with a dynamic multicultural atmosphere. Every year more than 28,000 people who work in and around businesses across Victoria, in Australia and overseas, learn and expand their skills through Kangan Batman TAFE.

Stemming back to as early as 1925, Kangan Batman TAFE's rich history involves the merger of three major institutes-John Batman, Broadmeadows College and the Richmond automotive campus of Barton Institute of TAFE.
1925 — Richmond Technical School established, delivering motor mechanics training as part of the post-Depression Youth Employment Scheme
1969 — Overcrowding splits Richmond Technical School's secondary education and TAFE functions into Richmond Technical School and Richmond College of TAFE
1970 — Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (RMIT) transfers its automotive training programs to Batman Automotive College, Coburg. Batman College changes its name to John Batman Institute of TAFE
1985 — Broadmeadows College of TAFE established
1994 — Moorabbin and Richmond Colleges of TAFE merge to form the Richmond Automotive Campus of Barton Institute of TAFE
1995 — Broadmeadows College of TAFE changes its name to Kangan Institute of TAFE, in honour of Myer Kangan OBE AO, the founder of Australia's TAFE system
1997 — John Batman and Kangan Institutes of TAFE amalgamate to form Kangan Batman TAFE
1998 — Kangan Batman TAFE acquires Richmond automotive campus of Barton Institute of TAFE
2006 — Kangan Batman TAFE opens its newest campus - Automotive Centre of Excellence - Docklands
[edit] Campuses
Kangan Batman TAFE’s seven Melbourne campuses offer a wide range of courses in a variety of fields, ranging from certificates to diplomas. It also provides education to residents over 15 at Parkville Youth Residential Centre and Melbourne Youth Justice Centre in Parkville.
Broadmeadows campus
Kangan Batman TAFE’s main campus is located approximately 20km from the CBD. Broadmeadows houses purpose-built specialist training facilities such as the Aerospace Industry Training Centre, the Transport and Logistics Centre and the Polymer Engineering Centre. It also holds the Richards restaurant, which trains hospitality students both as wiaters and chefs. The campus is a five-minute walk from the Broadmeadows Town Hall, and is directly opposite Broadmeadows Shopping Centre.
Coburg campus
The Coburg campus is situated in Melbourne’s northern suburbs, approximately 15km from the CBD. It primarily houses Kangan Batman TAFE’s automotive training, in areas such as light and heavy vehicle mechanics, vehicle trimming, motor sport and motorcycle mechanics. This campus also houses a new diesel emission testing and training facility developed in conjunction with the EPA.
Craigieburn campus
The Craigieburn Flexible Learning Centre is situated within the Malcolm Creek housing estate, approximately 25km north of the CBD. Situated next to the Craigieburn Primary School, the Centre offers the option to study all or a few of the subjects offered through flexible-mode delivery. The centre is one of four Flexible Learning Centres, equipped with the latest technology, internet access and library and learning resources in one convenient location.
Docklands campus
The Automotive Centre of Excellence (ACE) at Docklands is Kangan Batman TAFE’s newest campus. It is located on the southern edge of the CBD. Stage one, which opened in September 2006, houses body trades training, incorporating vehicle paint, panel beating and body making.
Essendon campus
The Essendon campus is approximately 10km from the CBD, in a region recognised as the leading centre for office, retail and business services in Melbourne’s north-west. The Essendon area is known for its premier sports and entertainment facilities that include the Moonee Valley Race Course (Australia’s harness racing capital), Windy Hill (home of the Essendon Football Club) and a chain of parks around and along the Maribyrnong River. Parking is available on campus.
Moreland campus
Situated in the suburb of Coburg, the Moreland campus is approximately 15km from the CBD. This campus primarily offers community services and health, language studies and business courses. Parking is available on campus.
Richmond campus
The Richmond campus spans over two streets, and is only a few km away from the CBD. It is home to study areas such as automotive, fashion and millinery, business and sport and recreation. Richmond’s central location means excellent access to established public transport networks. Parking is available on campus.

Kangan Batman TAFE has many nationally accredited courses from certificates to diplomas and graduate diplomas. Completing a Kangan Batman TAFE course with universities also enables students to transfer into some degrees and post-graduate studies.

Kangan Batman TAFE Student Association (KITSA) provides on campus and special day activities, trips and tours (discounted) sporting competitions (free), publications, give-aways, and resources and support to a vast number of students across our seven campuses at Broadmeadows, Coburg, Craigieburn, Essendon, Moreland, Richmond and Docklands.

The student’s from Kangan Batman TAFE have won many awards across many disciplines such as fashion, hospitality and automotive. Some of these awards include:
Industry Association of Australia Training Awards
Two Kangan Batman TAFE furnishing students achieved success at the Furnishing Industry Association of Australia Training Awards in 2006. Castlemaine resident Robert Spencer won the Best Certificate III in Furniture Finishing Apprentice Award while Shannon Richardson was a finalist in the Best Certificate III in Cabinet Making Apprentice category.
TAFE Apprentice Cook of the Year Awards
An award-winning chicken dish helped Kangan Batman TAFE cooking apprentice Antony Campbell to a winning trifecta in the State finals of the Victorian TAFE Apprentice Cook of the Year Awards in 2006.
First Antony, a second-year cooking apprentice from Lalor, won a Gold medal for his special dish. Then he went on to claim the Trophy for the best second-year apprentice.
Fashion International: Your Competition
The 2006 Fashion International competition was held at Homebush in Sydney. Out of eight hundred and sixty entrants from around Australia, six finalists were selected. Kangan Batman TAFE Fashion students Tracey Osborne won First Prize for Grand Formal Gowns (winning a Singer Sewing Machine and Singer Overlocker) and Rafik Saad won Second Prize in the same category.
