Kandy is a district of the Central Province of Sri Lanka. Its area is 2,365 km². The capital of the district is Kandy; other towns and villages include Abasingammedda.

The population according to 2001 census is 1,279,028 of which 74.1 % are sinhalese, 13.1 % Sri Lankan Moors, 8.1 % tamils of Indian origin and 4.1 % native Sri Lankan tamils. 73.3 % of the population are buddhists, 13.6 % muslim, 10.5 % hindu and 2.6 % christian.[1]
