Kandivali or Kandivli (Marathi कांदिवली) is the name of a suburb of Mumbai, India. It is also the name of the railway station in Kandivali suburb, on the Mumbai suburban railway, on the Western Railway (India) railway line.

Artefacts found near Kandivali indicate that the region around Kandivali was inhabited since the Stone Age. The township was a semi-rural area up to the 1980s, with agricultural land, hutments and villages. With the real estate boom in the 1980s and 1990s, many residential projects started to shift northward. This saw a frenzied construction activity leading to large scale development. The area has also witnessed the highest appreciation in land value in Mumbai. It is now considered a posh residential location of western suburbs of Mumbai with a number of upmarket constructions and complexes. The area currently has swank malls, wide roads, multiplexes and numerous flyovers. It is also popular as it is well connected via train and bus. The northern suburb of Borivali lies just a few kilometres away, and the Chatrapati Shivaji International Airport (Sahar) lies to the south.

The original inhabitants are the Maharastrian , the East Indian Catholic community who reside at Kandivli village,there is a community of SKP (somovanshi kshatriya pathare) who are originaly from mumbai residing in Kandivali village,this community own properties,land in this area, Koli (fishermen) who reside in the Charkop village.Now Kandivali(W)is a stronghold of Gujaratis and Kandivali(E) being cosmopolitan with Maharashtrians, Gujaratis, etc. It is one of the densely populated suburbs in Mumbai.

Western suburban railway line divides area in two parts as Kandivali (West) and Kandivali (East). The Kandivali railway station was built 100 years ago in 1907, then known as Khandolee. The station probably derived its name from the marathi word "Khaan" meaning mine. The area around Western Express between Malad and Kandivali had numerous stone quarries and was once famous for Malad Stone. Many heritage buildings in Mumbai were constructed with Malad stone between 1860 and 1930, notable among them are David Sasson library, Bombay House, Western Railway building at Churchgate.

Kandivali (West) includes village (gaon) , M.G.Road, Kamla Nagar, Mathuradas Road, Shanker Lane, Parekh Nagar, Dahanukar Wadi, Mahavir Nagar, Patel Nagar, Poisar, Ganesh Nagar, Irani wadi, Ekta Nagar and Charkop. It is a beautiful place and a cosmopolitan area. The oldest place in Kandivali is Kandivali Village (Gaon) which comprised of more than 5 families Mostly Pachkalshi's in 1800s. It developed a lot in 1900s. The Kandivali village is surrounded by all the basic amenities. It has a school, a college, a market, a temple, a hospital. The Kandivali railway station is just 10 minutes walking distance from this place.
There is a famous Masjid built in around the village area. The Kandivali village is one of the Old East Indian villages of Mumbai. It originally consisted of the Catholic [East Indian Community] families (such as the Mirandas, Mendes, Daniels, Rodrigues) and the Maharashtrian families (such as the Patils,Mahtre'ssJoshis ). Also there is a beautiful church "Our Lady of Assumption Church" in the same area, which is one of the oldest churches of Mumbai ,There is a Famous Shankar mandir in kandivali village where there is a pond in which lord ganesha immersion is done well managed by a youngstar krida mandal , The area surrounding the Mandir is proper kandivali village where localities stay they have own places which these days are converted to storied aparments , people staying when move out miss all the this, just beside village there is a bohra colony where a bohri muslim comunity stay there are very peace loving people all business class and well educated the are in good terms with surrounding maharastrian , There is a famous swimming pool in Kandivali which was built in 1965. It was a famous hotspot for youngsters in vacations. The M.G road in Kandivali(west)has the famous Kala Hanuman temple which is visited by hundreds of devotees every day.Kandivali is also famous for 56 years old Shreeji temple(Girirajji ni Haveli) on Mathuradas Road that was built by Kashibai Govindji Mandani in 1952 & is at present being taken care of by Nagardas Sunderji Dholakia & his three sons Ramesh, Kirti & Girish Dholakia. Today more than 5000 people visit this temple every month.
Kandivali was under British when they ruled India. Kandivali as it is all known was first called Candolim or candol by the British , and its neighbouring village was Poisar and Orlem . The Dhanukar river flowed from National Park through Kandivali , today it is just a "Nalla" .They had their base in one of the older and first schools of Kandivali St. Joseph High School. Narvane Vidyalay, The families in 1800s did not work. They were landlords of the land of entire Kandivali
Other notable places in Kandivali(West) are Shankar Lane,Dahanukar Wadi, Mahavir Nagar, Saibaba Nagar etc.Charkop is fast developing as a cosmopolitan area.

This lane is named after the Shankar Mandir Located in the Lane.The Residents of the lane are rich Gujaratis & Jains. The original Mahavir Nagar society is on Shanker Lane which was built way back in 1974. The Shanker Lane has many Jain Temples located as well. Sambhavnath Derasar, Mira Apartment derasar, Nutan Jinalay at Mahavir Nagar, Gruh Jinalay at Mahavir Nagar, and some Gruh Derasars at some of the flats in Mahavir Nagar and surrounding areas. It is basically the end Of Kandivali and start of Malad but officially it is located in Kandivali.After the completion of the Flyover it will connect Kandivali(East) directly with Linking road.The roadside foodjoint just 2 minutes away from this lane is Milap.Shoppers Stop & Reliance Energy is located at the start of the lane.The property prices are high as compared to the rest of Kandivali(West)as it connects Kandivali(East) with Linking Road and because of its vicinity to the station.The notable properties in Shankar Lane are Shankar Park,Agarwal Residency,Krishna Krupa,Sky Walk,Adarsh. There is also a big garden in this locality which is visited by young & old alike. The festivals of Diwali,Makar Sakranti, Navratri, Holi, Ganesh Chaturthi, Christmas are celebrated with much enthusiasm here. This is the most happening place in Kandivli during monsoons. Loads of people (all ages) come on the street to enjoy the flooding. There are many brokerage houses in and around Shankar Lane such as Nariman Finvest Pvt Ltd, LKP Shares, Angel broking and many more. Further, there are various kirana stores as well, like Nirmal Stores in Nirmal Apartments, Mahavir Stores in Mahavir Nagar, Sonal Store at Vardhman Kutir, Gala at Kamal Apartment, Katchi at Mahavir Nagar corner, etc.

Kamala Nagar is located in the center of Kandivali-(W) from the geographical point of view. Not far from its historical old mate "Patel Nagar". It has been famous for celebrating festivals like Navratri & Ganeshotsav on large & open for public scale...During Navratri it witnesses almost 5,000 people at a time and provides such a quality of entertainment. It is also famous for distributing free snacks during the last days of Ganpati Visarjan and over the last few years it has successfully fed over 20,000 people on a consistent basis.

The original inhabitants are kolis (Fishermen, who reside in the village of charkop). The famous among them are Kenis, Bhandaris, Patils and Vaitys. The 'Dingeshwar Temple' where all villagers gather to-gether once in a year to worship the god. During these days they perform Palkhi and Satyanarayan Maha-Pooja. There is a Talao (lake) where 'Ganpati Imersion' take place. Apart from one Municipal Marathi School, there is a Secondary School named "Ekveera Vidyalaya' run by a Trust named "Shri Ekveera Dnyan Prasarak Mandal". The Trust run Primary & Secondary Schools in Marathi as well as English mediums. Property prices in charkop area has increased significantly after announcement of Mumbai metro project wherein charkop will be a starting point. It's developed with lovely new buildings and towers, sector 8 looks amazing with new buildings and towers, siddhi heights is having sea-facing luxury flats, sea view, hill view, sea crown, many more beautiful buildings. Charkop is starting up with some malls.

Poisar is known for its Catholic School Our lady Of Remedy High School and the Our lady of Remedy church , This was built in the 1920s and is a prominent landmark here at Poisar. Just diagonally opposite the school is a well known Jari - Mari Temple. It is Goddess Jari - Mari temple where hundreds of devotees come every day to worship. In the same complex there is Shiva temple, Ganesh Temple, Shri Hanumanji temple and Shri Shirdi Sai Baba temple. The place still has many old fashioned houses which exist in the Poisar village, which exists behind the Church. Many Tamil Christian reside at Poisar village apart from East India and Goans.
The Poisar market is a regular feature in the morning at the ground adjoining the Church. Where people from the neighbouring areas come to shop for their essential commodities.
The area is also famous for "Raghuleela Mall" and Poinsur Gymkhana. Recently the area along poinsar depot up to Mahavir nagar is declared as GREEN ZONE (RESIDENTIAL ZONE).M/s Hiranandani Builders are going for a big residntial project in front of Raghuleela Megamall.There will be 4 towers, each 45 story with club house. So soon this area will be a great residential zone in subrbarea.

Kandivali (East) is a cosmopolitan area and includes Thakur Complex,Samata Nagar, Thakur Village, Asha Nagar, Hanuman Nagar and Lokhandwala Complex. It has one of the highest population concentration in Mumbai. Ashok Nagar at kandivali (East) in Mumbai is one of the oldest residential area. Earlier, the only landmark in Kandivali (E) was the Mahindra & Mahindra Limited tractor division. Now the area has many tall skyscrapers and posh residential complexes.
[edit] Karsangli Devi Akurli Mata Mandir
A beautiful temple of Shri Karsangli Akurli Mata is in existance in Kandivali (East) since last about 150 years.Perviously known as "Akurli Village" and said temple of goddess Shri Krusangali Devi Akurli Mata is gramdevata of the Akurli village,This temples is situated on open land about 1 acre 2 gunthas (Appor 4500 sq.meter),with Dakshin Mukhai Hanuman mandir,Sidhheshwar Mahadeo mandir,Shri Datta mandir and Shitaladevi mandir in its premises. Its existence since last 150 years old is proved by Govt.official record known as "Bombay Gazettor's year 1882 (VOL-XIV) on page no.102", available with dept. of Archive, Govt of Maharastara. Elepistan colleg building ,Fort,Mumbai. In which following information is given about the said temple. "About three miles north-east of Goregaon station,in a small wooden temple within the land of the deserted village of Akurli is an image of Devi known as "KARSAUGLI DEVI". This image is said to have been found at the bottom of a pond about thirty years ago and was set up and provided with a temple by a large Hindu landowner Mr. Bhau Rasul A few year ago(1875)a childless Hindu made a vow to the goddess and in due course his wife had a son. Since then a yearly fair has been hold on Magh fullmoon (January-February). It is attend by about 1000 Hindus beside some Musalmans and Parsis.

Exactly opposite the Akurli Mata Mandir is the 120 year old Kandivali Gowshala, which is house to around 200 cows. This is spread over an area of 5 acres and is distinct green cover in an otherwise growing concrete jungle. However, the greenary is now limited to the interiors of Gowshala since recent developments have compelled the authorities to cut down the trees and grass in this locality. The cows are also kept inhouse most of the time and are fed from the interior & generally are not taken outside the locality.

Samata Nagar is one of the oldest areas in Kandivali, which has schools, college, post office, telephone exchange office etc. Most of the buildings in Samata Nagar are of MHADA.The main road from Samata Nagar further inward leads to Thakur Village.

Thakur Complex was developed in 1990s by Thakur & Sons. This has now become one of the hippest and poshest areas in mumbai suburbia. The Thakur builders also established many educational institutes including Thakur Vidya Mandir and Thakur Polytechnic. This is a famed and an upmarket residential area in Kandivali. It is also one of the most sought after addresses in the suburbs after BANDRA, JUHU, PARLE, and ANDHERI mainly because of the ammenities and highly sophisticated and educated crowd residing here. This area has a number of schools like Thakur Vidya Mandir, St. Lawrence, and many more and also colleges like Thakur Polytechnic for engineering. Cambridge school is another important school which has senior secondary education too. Cambridge school is one of the oldest and the best schools in the vicinity. It offers a wide range of subjects. It has restaurants like The Avenue and Sheesha.
The major Housing Societies in Thakur Complex are Kanakia Park, Videocon Towers, Satyam Towers, Shivalaya tower, Shivalik Tower, Mahadev tower, Maruti tower, Tirupati Tower, Highway Park, Gayatri Enclave, Gayatri Darshan, amrut dham, dynasty, Gokul Galaxy, Gokul Heaven, Dhruv, Aditya, Siddhivinayak, SANSKRUTI, Sankalp Siddhi, Jinal, Hinal, Pathik, Gokul Garden (A to Z wings), Kanakia Park-1 & 2, Avenue Hotel,Poonam complex, Asha Nagar etc. (with a cluster of Housing Societies within it.)
The Thakur Complex is the major hub for Medical Facilities in Kandivali East. Approx. 85% of Medical Nursing Homes of Kandivali East are located in it. It also boasts of the first and most advanced Medical Diagnostic Centre of Kandivali East that is Dr. Gandhi's Diagnostic Centre/Imaging Clinic in Akanksha Building, Asha Nagar, (Thakur Complex) Kandivali East. Established in 1994, the clinic has facilities of Ultrasound, Colour Doppler, Echocardiography and Digital X Rays which are first in this part of the suburb. The clinic is the only centre which offers facilities of Mammography (used in early detection of Breast Cancers), OPG and Cephalometry used in Oro-Facial and Maxillary Surgeries and Dental Workup. The clinics also offer ECG and Pathology services to its clients.

Thakur Village is an upmarket locality situated along the Western Express Highway. But only the nearby Samata Nagar locality and the rearer parts of complex belong to slums and SRAs. making thakur village a downmarket area. It lies midway between the suburban railway stations of Kandivali and Borivali on the Western railway. Thakur Village stands apart from other localities, due to its skyline, posh commercial establishments, educational institutes, parks, night life and all round facilities.It also has many educational institutes like Thakur college of science and commerce,thakur college of engineering,thakur public school,gundecha high school,etc.Built along the lines of Thakur Complex,and also over the larger area--but couldn't be as better though. Mainly because of the road that is not enough and population due to huge building complexes, the traffic being really cumbersome. Also gets heavily heavily flooded during rains.
[edit] Lokhandwala Township
Lokhandwala Township mostly comprises buildings constructed by Lokhandwala Construction Pvt. Ltd. (www.lokhandwala.com). With wide tree lined roads and spacious grounds, an air of lazy serenity hangs over the complex. The Township in itself is like a self sufficient suburb within Kandivali, with the newly built Lokhandwala Foundation School in the centre of the complex to the various shops and restaurants catering to every whim of its citizens. Nursery school like FUNSKOOL is also there. It is mainly a residential area .There are many building like Essbel Society ,Anita Vihar ,Green Hills etc. The population here is very cosmopolitan, comprising of a heterogeneous mix of Maharashtrians,Mangalorians, Gujaratis, Bengalis, Tamilians, Malayalees, Biharis, UPiites, etc. living in complete harmony. Krishti, the association of Bengalis at Lokhandwala, has been in the forefront of organising the splendid Sri Sri Durga Puja for the last 3 years, starting 2005. This 4 day long Puja has been the melting pot of all cultures. It is seen that all communities participate in the festivities of Durga Puja with equal fervour. For three days people throng to the grandly decorated pandal at the Whispering Palms in the daytime for Mahaprasad during lunchtime, where everybody is invited. The evenings see diverse cultural programs organised by Krishti which involve participation of local as well as artists from Kolkata. Krishti also organises Mahakali Puja and Saraswati Puja with equal enthusiasm and participation of its members and residents.
Oberoi Gardens
It is one of the prestigious building in Thakur Village.It has aswimming pool, tennis court and a well equipped Gym.Ther building has also received award for the well maintained society in Mumbai.
[edit] Ashok Nagar
Ashok Nagar at kandivali (East) in Mumbai is one of the oldest residential areas in Kandivali (East), most of the residents in this locality belong to the Marathi Gujarati and Marwari families but there are also many Maharashtrian families residing here. There are couple of Derashars for Jain, one in Damodarwadi and another opposite Children Academy School. This area also has a famous Swayambhoo Ganesh Mandir. 'ASHIRWAD' is one of oldest housing society it about 40 yrs.
Since year 2005, there is a new addition to the locality and i.e. Kalpataru Gardens. It has a swimming pool and health club. The flyover (still under construction) connecting East to West will land at Shopper Stop in West and Near Kalpataru in East.
Ashok Nagar is hardly 10-15 mins walking distance from Kandivali station, however there are also shared Auto Rikshaws from station which takes visitors to Ashok Nagar for Rs 4/- per head.
This locality has developed rapidly over the last decade and although this locality was known for middle class residents, a lot of rich and upwardly mobile people are now buying property in this area. The Ashok Nagar skyline has now changed a lot in the last few years with many of the old residential buildings demolished and re-constructed with high rises. The crime rate in the area is almost 0% and people in the locality are generally very professional and helpful. Being close to kandivali station is another added advantage for residents staying in this locality. Growel's 101 - Big Bazaar retail mall along with Cinemax theatre is hardly 10 mins walk from this area. Besides, the Western Express highway is just 1.5 km away, the Domestic and International airports are hardly 20-22 km away from Ashok Nagar.
There are are many good quality food stalls (for Dosas, Bhelpuri, PaniPuri etc..) in this locality
The famous schools in Ashok Nagar are :-
- SweetLand Nursery school, specially for nursery kids.
- Children's Academy High School.
Some of the festivals celebrated in this locality are Holi, Ganesh festival, Navratri festival and Mahavir Jayanti.

Kandivali (East) is home to many industrial estates, businesses and service providers. Some of the famous industrial estates in Kandivali (East) are Akruli Industrial Estate, Gundecha Industrial Estate & Bonanza Industrial Estate.
These industrial estates are mostly converted into commerical offices. Kandivali (East) is home to many medium to large sized companies as well.

Big Bazar is a mega-shopping mall located on the station road near Kandivali station. Big Bazar is located between Akruli and Gundecha Industrial Complexes. A new exit is constructed linking Big Bazar with Western Express Highway. This is reduced the traffic problem.
