Kanal A is Slovenia's first private television network, commencing broadcasts in November 1990.
A third of Kanal A's shares were bought by the SBS Broadcasting Group in 1997. SBS sold its interests in the station to Central European Media Enterprises (CME) in 1999.

In 2004, CME announced that the station's viewership was rated at an 8% audience share, or fourth-largest among Slovenia's television channels.
