The problem is that such things should not be changed just for the sake of changing them, which is what has happened here. Also note that there is nothing "archaic" about typewriter marks, and they are still very (very) widely used...almost any keyboard you come across will use them, and they certainly have a dominant market share in terms of use due to this. There is nothing inherently right or wrong about either format, and no preference in which should be used.
