[edit] Background

The album was to be released by Arista on April 23, 2002, but was canceled because the record label deemed the album too un-commercial.[1]. Q-Tip was quoted as saying, “I am really disappointed that Kamaal wasn't released. LA Reid didn't know what to do with it; then, three years later, they release Outkast. What Outkast is doing now, those are the kinds of sounds that are on Kamaal the Abstract. Maybe even a little more out. Kamaal was just me, guerrilla.”[2]

Despite the album not getting a proper release, the advances to Kamaal the Abstract made it into the public's hands. Arista did released promotional singles for the album.[3]

The album was not released because it's style of sound was different from what A Tribe Called Quest, and more importantly, Pop music fans were used to. Unfortunately, Kamaal missed a fine opportunity; Andre 3000's The Love Below contained very similar acoustic musical directions, away from sample-driven hip hop. Andre 3000 even ended on Q-tip's next unreleased album Open.

[edit] Future Release

In 2006, Q-Tip announced he was in negotiations to regain control of the album from Arista/BMG and plans on re-releasing it in 2007[4].

Some Kamaal the Abstract tracks may appear on Q-tip coming album.
