Phrasing on RfA votes.

Hi. Regarding this edit [1]: While it is normal to indicate an "edit conflict support" this is often interpreted as a sign that many people are rushing to support. It could be unecessarily demoralizing for a candidate who is already failing at an RfA to see "edit conflict oppose." Therefore, it might make more sense to just state one's opposition and not note the edit conflict. JoshuaZ 00:37, 1 August 2006 (UTC)

August 6th, 2006 WP:RETF update

Note you are getting this because you are signed up on the RETF spamlist
Hey guys. Before I do anything, I have to thank all these people who have helped me make RETF more bug-free via my challenge to them on the Language noticeboard. Some were redundant lines, and some were words that probably never appear in Wikipedia, but as I said, I don't want any false positives in RETF.

THANKS GUYS! Now for the fixes and suggestions put on the RETF page:

  • 'behaviour' is a legitimate UK English spelling --Guinnog
  • 'councellor' to 'councillor' when 'counsellor' could be the intended word. --mattbr30
  • "Costal" is a real word, meaning "related to the rib" —Mets501 (talk)
  • 'judgemental' to 'judgmental'. According to my dictionary, both are equally acceptable. mattbr30
  • 'Adaptions' to 'Adaptations'. JoeSmack Talk
  • repond and variants -> respond --Guinnog

RETF development

I don't know what to say really. Something has come up and I might not be able to continue to update RETF after the next week or so.......I have put in countless sleepless nights of just me, my computer, and a case of Rockstar energy drink working on this. It has made me feel that I really am a devoted Wikipedian.

I have developed RegExTypoFix from a little hobby of mine into a full SourceForge project. I told a friend that I’ve worked 50 development hours in all. I have a really bad sense of time, but I’m sure it was more. I won’t lie, I am very proud of my work. Hopefully this will be used long after I leave.

To ensure that, I need a person/people to become admins on the RETF project. I don’t ask that you do anything but fix any errors that people report. There is a bit of a process to doing this, but I can teach you. Please send me a message on my talk page. Please my close friends only please, I hope you understand that I want to 100% trust this person. However, I might just hand it off to User:Bluemoose, as if he didn’t have enough on his plate =D.

Download + more

AWB now loads RETF everytime it loads, this box is no longer needed.

To keep an eye on RETF, you can use {{User:Mboverload/RegExTypoFix/updatebox}} and it will produce the box you see here =D. When AWB updates, I can turn it green on command =P

Extract Typos.xml from the zip file either using the zip extraction tool provided with XP or use 7zip.

Under the new system that Martin (User:Bluemoose) developed Typos.xml is separate from the settings file. This way it can be easily swapped out and doesn't interfere with your own personal find and replace settings. Put it in the AWB directory. It is loaded automatically when you start AWB.

In addition, each Typos.xml file comes coded with a version number. Perhaps in some future release AWB will be able to check to see if there's an update for you!

The latest version is not built into AWB, you will have to download it here Just updated a few minutes ago. --mboverload@ 01:59, 7 August 2006 (UTC)

August Esperanza Newsletter

Program Feature: To-Do List
The Esperanza To-Do List is a place where you may list any request, big or small, for assistance. If you need help with archiving your usertalk, for example, all you need to do is list it here and somebody will help you out. Likewise, if you need help with some area of editing on Wikipedia, list it here! Again, any matter, trivial or not, can be placed on this page. However, all matters listed on this page must not be of an argumentative nature. You do not need to be a member of Esperanza (or this program) to place or fulfill requests on this page. If you don't have any requests, consider coming by and fulfilling a few! This program has not been very active, but has lots of potential!
What's New?
In order to help proposed programs become specific enough to make into full-fledged programs, the In development section of the proposals page has been created. Proposals that are promising, but need to be organized in more detail are listed here. Please take a look at what is there, and help the proposals turn into programs.
To improve both the layout and text of the front page, in an attempt to clarify the image of Esperanza, the front page is going to have some redesigning take place. Please take your creative minds to Wikipedia:Esperanza/Front page redesign to brainstorm good ideas.
Many thanks to MiszaBot, courtesy of Misza13, for delivering the newsletter.
  1. In order to make sure all users who join Esperanza are welcomed, a list of volunteers who are willing to welcome new Esperanzians is at Wikipedia:Esperanza/Members#Esperanza_welcomers. Please add yourself if you are interested; we want to make sure all new Esperanza members are welcomed!
  2. The In development section of the proposals page has been created.
  3. Proposals page: Some proposals have been moved to the aforementioned "In development" section, some have been left as a proposal, and others have been archived. For those proposals that were a good idea but didn't necessarily constitute a program, General Esperanzial Actions has been created.
  4. Two small pieces of charter reform will be decided on in a straw poll at Wikipedia talk:Esperanza/Governance. One involves filling the position of any councillors who may leave, the other involves reforming the charter.
  5. Until cooperation with the Kindness Campaign is better defined, it remains as a proposed program.
  6. There is a page for discussing the front page redesign.

Although having the newsletter appear on everyone's userpage is desired, this may not be ideal for everyone. If, in the future, you wish to receive a link to the newsletter, rather than the newsletter itself, you may add yourself to Wikipedia:Esperanza/Newsletter/Opt Out List.

RockWay Press deletion

Hi My name is Persi and I would just like to ask if you have been following the discussion regarding the deletion of the article on RockWay Press. I have provided several very valid sources and it would mean a lot to potential authors who surf for information on this publisher to be able to read this article. If you have visited the sites that link from the article, you would see a lot of discussion from people like me who have been burned by this publisher and by scam publishers in general. I realize Wikipedia isnt a consumer protection site -per se - but it does have the visibility needed to help people learn more about this company in particular and about scam publishers in general. Preditors and Editors is the most reputable site in the publishing world regarding rating publishers. This weekend, they gave Rockway their red "Not Recommended" rating. However if you surf the name Rockway on Google, you will find that there is no connection to Rockway listed -- even if you surf hundreds and hundreds of listings. However, Wikipedia is the first listing on page two. There are thousands of people out there writing every day -- thinking they have what it takes to be the next Dan Brown. The publishing world is tough to break into - and when a company like Rockway offers what seems to be an easy entry, many people go for it - only to be burned big time. When a person writes, that work is their intellectual property. It is akin to giving birth to actually write a book. And it is unfortunate that people like Rockway can so easily take away not only your dreams but your intellectual property as well. Google Rockway, please. Note how high up on the listing the Wikipedia page is. Think about innocent victims all over the world who just might see that listing and read it before they send any money or sign anything. Realize that the article here also offers these people the ability to link to sites like Preditors and Editors where more information to help them is available. Not too long ago, I was a neophyte like that -- I had NO idea what Preditors and Editors even was. I came within a breath of signing away a very good book I put my life into to Rockway. Since then, I have joined with others who work within the industry to bring these scams to light. Please let us have the chance to reach more people through Wikipedia. Your positive comments would be much appreciated. This is not a personal matter -- if you read the Absolute Write site, you will see that only today a new victim posted. There are more and more every day. Thanks for listening. Persi
