Kalals are an ethnic group present mainly in Punjab, India also known as Ahluwalia because of the famous Kalals Sikh Misl leader Sardar Jassa Singh Ahluwalia.

Most prominent among the Kalals are the Ahluwalias which form a substantial proportion of this ethnic group. The word has originated from the fact that earlier the community used to distil liquor in the country side. The community got social standing only after Nawab Kapur Singh decided to accord misl(warrior) status on the community. Presently the community is one of the most prosperous and influential communities of Punjab.

  • Montek Singh Ahluwalia - Prominent Indian economist.
  • Premindra Singh Bhagat - Lt. General (Retd.) in the Indian Army and Victoria Cross winner.
  • Waris Ahluwalia - Hollywood Actor
  • Kiranjit Ahluwalia - Famous female figure portrayed by Ashwariya Rai in the film
  • Sonny Ahluwalia - Punjabi King during the era of the great bull.

Their main business was to trade wine and alcohol. Now mostly Kalals of UP are migrated to USA and UK where they enjoy a very good status. They are educationally and financially very strong.
