Kajmakčalan

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Kajmakčalan (Macedonian Cyrillic: Кајмакчалан) is the tallest peak (2521 m) of the Nidže mountain range in the south of the Republic of Macedonia. The peak consists of granite, gneiss and mica. The national frontier between the Republic of Macedonia and Greece runs across the summit.

In September 1916, a battle between Serbian and Bulgarian troops took place at Kajmakčalan and the adjacent peaks, resulting in a Serbian victory. There is a small church and crypt for the Serbian soldiers who died nearby during World War I.
