[edit] WikiProject Ice Hockey Newsletter

edit

WikiProject Ice Hockey Newsletter

Dear Kaiser matias! You are receiving as you are a member of WikiProject Ice Hockey There's been many more new things going on at WP:HOCKEY, and I think this will help you to stay informed. Since the last newsletter sent out in October, there have been many new changes. I'm hoping to make this newsletter a bit more regular; Kaiser matias and Skudrafan1 asked for a new issue a week ago, but sadly, I've been a bit lazy and committed to other things hence this other delay. --Maxim(talk)

New recognized content

There has been numerous new recognized content, so much that it's too time-consuming to sift through the "trophy cases" on WP:HOCKEY. Some interesting achievements:

Task forces

By Maxim

There was a new taskforce created within the WikiProject to deal with topics related to the Boston Bruins. It was originally founded as a separate WikiProject, but was quickly turned into a taskforce within WikiProject Ice Hockey. The list of participants is located here. Located at WP:BRUINS, the taskforce's goals are to make Boston Bruins and Bobby Orr featured articles. Good luck!

New Administrators

By Maxim
Since October, there have been three new admins promoted within the project:

A previously admin-only feature has been made available for all users. The rollback feature allows a user to quickly revert vandalism with one click. If you wish to have rollback, contact an active admin or post a request to WP:RFR.

Featured Topic Drive

By Maxim

The original featured topic drive, initiated by Scorpion0422, has concluded succesfully. National Hockey League awards is now a featured topic, with 24 articles in total. Of them, 20 are featured lists, one is a featured article, and the other three are trophy articles that were too short to become featured lists. Eight users signed up to help out, shown here. The next Featured Topic hasn't been decided upon, and the ideas and organization for it fell apart. If you have any ideas, don't hesitate to share them at WT:HOCKEY.

Notes

  • More editors are needed to help out with the newsletter. Maxim doesn't have an infinite nor perfect supply of ideas, and thus he might omit some interesting news.
  • Portal:Ice hockey is being considered for featured status. Feel free to nominate features at Portal:Ice hockey/Suggestions.
  • Should Chris Pronger have been suspended for more than eight games for stomping on Ryan Kesler? Vote here!

[edit] NHL article rule discussion

Please have a look at WT:HOCKEY#Editing "records" articles when a record is broken if you have time. I would like to discuss the inflexibility of the "don't update until the season is over" rule. − Twas Now ( talkcontribse-mail ) 20:36, 20 March 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Thanks

Thanks for fixing my oversight at {{Legendsmember}}. If you have time, please also review Varsity Blues men's ice hockey team, and reassess. Flibirigit (talk) 18:55, 27 March 2008 (UTC)

[edit] El Senor Presidente

I just saw the message you left on the MMM project page, and first of all I wanted to say thank-you for the encouragement and second, I wanted to let you know that the El Senor Presidente novel page is up for FAC. If you have the time to look it over and give us some feedback or vote on it we would really appreciate it. We are hoping that the nomination process will not be too drawn out as we don't have too much time for our grades, which will be much improved if we get to FA status! Thanks again for the note, --Mfreud (talk) 05:35, 7 April 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Image source problem with Image:Vezina.gif

Image Copyright problem

Thanks for uploading Image:Vezina.gif. I noticed that the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you did not create this file yourself, you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. If you obtained it from a website, then a link to the website from which it was taken, together with a restatement of that website's terms of use of its content, is usually sufficient information. However, if the copyright holder is different from the website's publisher, their copyright should also be acknowledged.

As well as adding the source, please add a proper copyright licensing tag if the file doesn't have one already. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then the {{GFDL-self}} tag can be used to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Non-free content, use a tag such as {{non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair use. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their source and tagged them, too. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. Unsourced and untagged images may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If the image is copyrighted under a non-free license (per Wikipedia:Fair use) then the image will be deleted 48 hours after 13:52, 9 April 2008 (UTC). If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Skeezix1000 (talk) 13:52, 9 April 2008 (UTC)

Thanks for your email. We need a source, because the date and origin of the image will dictate whether or not it is in the public domain. If it is a Canadian image, it is most likely public domain in both Canada and the U.S. (because the Wikipedia servers are located in the U.S., an image must be public domain both in its country of origin and in the U.S.). If it is an American image, we cannot determine if the image is public domain as it could easily have been taken in 1923 or afterwards (any time up until some time towards the end of 1925). That's why the source is essential, because the image can't be deemed to be public domain without it. I hope that helps. We don't necessarily need to know the photographer (the creators of older photos are often unknown), but we do need the source. I guess the most important question is: where did you get the image? Skeezix1000 (talk) 19:44, 9 April 2008 (UTC)
Normally, we'd want something a bit more certain, but I think you're right in this case that the image is almost certainly a Canadian one. In that case, I'll fix the image description and it should be fine. Thanks for the help. Skeezix1000 (talk) 16:43, 10 April 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Comprehensive long lists‎ discussion

Hello, I noticed that you took part in the recent FLRC for List of Arsenal F.C. players and thought you might be interested in participating in a new discussion. The FLRC was closed as no consensus and it is clear the the issue of incompleteness in longer FLs is not over, so a discussion page has been started here. Please feel free to comment. -- Scorpion0422 21:21, 16 April 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Stanley Cup template

Thanks for bringing up this issue. I'm not a member of the Hockey project, and kind of made an assumption that since baseball, american football, and basketball had adopted these navboxes, hockey would be no different. For someone like Richard, I would suggest looking at Babe Ruth as a player with many World Series titles. On the Ruth page the champion navboxes are placed within one collapsible navbox (so all of Richard's 11 navboxes would take up the space of one). That way, if a reader wants to look, if they choose, without cluttering the page. Beyond that, I don't see much that differentiates hockey from other sports on WP. Let me know what you think. Thanks. - Masonpatriot (talk) 00:44, 21 April 2008 (UTC)

Thanks for the response. I agree that things like this are a balance. While there is a need to limit the clutter that may come to a page like Henri Richard or Mark Messier, I also think that navboxes like this help build the many articles that are in stub status and bolster the articles of the not-so-notable players. To use an example from baseball, a player like Kevin Cash, who has been an on-and-off backup catcher in MLB for a few years low on the notability scale. His inclusion, however, on the 2007 Boston Red Sox enhances his notability, since he was a member of that group. Anyway, those are some of my thoughts. Please check out Georges Boucher for an example of what I was talking about regarding minimizing multiple navboxes. Thanks. - Masonpatriot (talk) 01:43, 21 April 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Canucks

TSN, Sportsnet and HNIC is all reporting it - it's been confirmed internally - I'd say it's safe to post it. -- Tawker (talk) 03:52, 23 April 2008 (UTC)

Hah, this is Wikipedia - we thrive on being able to beat everyone else to posting something :D - no, I see your point - but I figured it'd prevent 5 trillion edits and reverts if we just looked at probabilities and posted it. -- Tawker (talk) 05:25, 23 April 2008 (UTC)
You do know sprotect isn't going to stop the edits from happening - although I'm as reluctant as all to full protect it. Far too many accounts have overrides -- Tawker (talk) 05:32, 23 April 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Replaceable fair use Image:Oliwa.jpg

Replaceable fair use

Thanks for uploading Image:Oliwa.jpg. I noticed the description page specifies that the media is being used under a claim of fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails our first non-free content criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed media could reasonably be found or created that provides substantially the same information. If you believe this media is not replaceable, please:

  1. Go to the media description page and edit it to add {{di-replaceable fair use disputed}}, without deleting the original replaceable fair use template.
  2. On the image discussion page, write the reason why this image is not replaceable at all.

Alternatively, you can also choose to replace this non-free media by finding freely licensed media of the same subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or similar) media under a free license, or by taking a picture of it yourself.

If you have uploaded other non-free media, consider checking that you have specified how these images fully satisfy our non-free content criteria. You can find a list of description pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that even if you follow steps 1 and 2 above, non-free media which could be replaced by freely licensed alternatives will be deleted 2 days after this notification (7 days if uploaded before 13 July 2006), per our non-free content policy. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Do you want to opt out of receiving this notice? Rettetast (talk) 22:25, 1 May 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Vancouver Canucks task force

Hey! I noticed you spend a bit of your time on Wikipedia editing Vancouver Canucks related articels. I have been thinking about starting a Vancouver Canucks task force under WikiProject Ice Hockey for some time now, and am now going into the stage of gathering interest, seeing if anyone would actually be interested in joining. I've made a temporary page for the task force at User:Nurmsook/Vancouver Canucks task force. Basically, I just need to get enough members before I actually launch the task force. I still have to create some templates and alter a few that already exist once I get enough members, so hopefully you will be interested! If you would like to help out, please add your name to the list at User:Nurmsook/Vancouver Canucks task force#Participants. Thanks! – Nurmsook! (talk) 00:06, 2 May 2008 (UTC)

I have gone ahead and launched the task force. It can be found at Wikipedia:WikiProject Ice Hockey/Vancouver Canucks task force. If you'd like to add a userbox to your userpage, feel free to add {{User WikiProject Ice Hockey/Vancouver Canucks}}. Basically, for the first little while here, I'll be tagging all applicable pages with the task force option on the talk page. From then on, it'll just be general improvement of the Canucks related articles. Feel free to take any route you please with this task force. Hopefully we can make some great improvements to these articles! – Nurmsook! (talk) 22:42, 3 May 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Protecting Overtime (ice hockey)

Thanks, I was just about ready to ask for it to be protected myself. Whammies Were Here 06:09, 5 May 2008 (UTC)

I'm wondering: I see the discussion on the issue, but why block edits until the game is over? While there are pointless edits, a lot of people are reading this article, and I don't see why we can't let them know that right away when viewing the article. Ral315 (talk) 06:11, 5 May 2008 (UTC)
I think thats a thing thats done Wiki-wide. Since the game isn't offically over, it shouldn't be listed, but I'm sure there is a better explanation. Whammies Were Here 06:16, 5 May 2008 (UTC)
I'm not aware of any page, anywhere, that can't be updated until an event is completed. Ral315 (talk) 06:17, 5 May 2008 (UTC)
Making edits to update information is never unencyclopedic. Ral315 (talk) 06:19, 5 May 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Trevor Linden

I understand, as sometimes to me, Wikipedia policies and regulations make no sense at times as they get in the way of getting things done. ThePointblank (talk) 05:43, 15 May 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Re: Trevor Linden

Thank you so much!!! :-) I'm very glad that the FAC closed though; I was getting totally sick of laundry lists. :-p I even forgot to do some things yesterday, it's great you helped me there. :-) Maxim(talk) 21:59, 22 May 2008 (UTC)

Getting Linden on the Main Page can be reasonably easily arranged. However, the jersey retirement idea might not work... do you have any other dates in mind? Maxim(talk) 22:23, 22 May 2008 (UTC)
Grats on the FA guys... and don't hog all of the main page dates! I wanna get the Flames article up for the season opener in October.  ;) Resolute 22:39, 22 May 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Image:Lindenmclean1994.jpg

I recently noticed that you deleted Image:Lindenmclean1994.jpg, citing invalid justification. As the uploader of the image, that leads me to just ask for some clarification. I'm not totally familiar with the whole image policy, finding it way to complex and difficult to follow when there's much more I'd rather be doing, so I hope you can bear with me here. I added the image when preparing Trevor Linden for it's FA nom, which it passed. I'd like to point out that not once during the nomination were any concerns raised about this or any other images, but that's probably not enough of a basis to back this on.

The image was added after I was trying to find more images of Linden, feeling two current ones were not enough. After looking at Dominik Hasek, which uses some non-free images. Specifically, my rational for uploading was Image:VezinaHasek.jpg. As such, I tried to provide the same justification used for that image.

I don't want this to be seen as a user complaining that someone deleted their image, because it's not that. I'm more trying to understand what rational can be given to keep Image:Lindenmclean1994.jpg, as it is the most defining picture in the career of Trevor Linden. Kaiser matias (talk) 17:59, 27 May 2008 (UTC)

To use the image would require a full rationale to be written explaining how the image complies with all the criteria at WP:NFCC. Do you think you could do that? Stifle (talk) 18:15, 27 May 2008 (UTC)
