[edit] Re:Program to count pixels of a certain color

I've seen the same question asked three times in the reference desk with the same answer every time: No, there is no progrem (free or commercial) that will count the number of pixels in an image of a certain color. There is no need to ask this question again. --Kainaw (talk) 06:42, 18 January 2007 (UTC)

Definately not the answer I want to hear :(

Makes me wonder where all those people who ask that go next... --hello, i'm a member | talk to me! 00:20, 19 January 2007 (UTC)

All those people? I was being polite. You asked the question each time. --Kainaw (talk) 01:30, 19 January 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Comment by you removed from ref desk

Hi there Kainaw. I removed a comment by you from the science ref desk because it appeared to me (and at least one other user) that the advice you were giving was dangerous. See Wikipedia_talk:Reference_desk#Dangerous_advice_removed. I'm happy to discuss the point either there or via talk pages, but please don't restore it. -- SCZenz 18:11, 21 January 2007 (UTC)

No problem. I know that because one person died of water poisoning recently, there is a fear that people will be dropping like flies from water poisoning every day now. Of course, everyone will forget about it in a couple weeks and then my comment about lactic acid won't seem so dangerous anymore. --Kainaw (talk) 06:30, 22 January 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Lincoln/Bush

Riiiigggghhhht. All roads lead to Bush. Oh, well; some zealous admin seems to have deleted most of the comments anyway, so the point is moot. Clarityfiend 18:15, 23 January 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Patriot Act addition

See the talk page for the Patriot Act. The section you added has been added and removed many times. Currently, it is removed while being discussed on the talk page. The majority appear to feel that it should not be in the article because it has very little in common with the Patriot Act. A minority feels that the Patriot Act is Bush's ticket to follow Hitler and become a war-mongering dictator. Please feel free to voice your opinion on the talk page. --Kainaw (talk) 10:11, 25 January 2007 (UTC)

LOL. Well, it's obvious how you feel about it. Are you on Rove's payroll, or do you just hate America? --71.90.71.213 10:27, 25 January 2007 (UTC)
Why do I have to "just hate America"? Why can't I hate everyone - especially people who tell me that I have to just hate America? --Kainaw (talk) 10:38, 25 January 2007 (UTC)
Of course you are right. Someone on Rove's payroll would hate every form of democracy, not just America. --71.90.71.213 11:06, 25 January 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Answering your question

That depends on how much sympathy do you have for opportunism. Mr.K. (talk) 20:46, 2 February 2007 (UTC)

Oh - I forgot. The military is the sole source of opportunity for some people. We don't have things like college scholarships, corporate scholarships, vocation training (paid for by lottery money), minority support programs... Nope. Just the military. Our country really sucks. --Kainaw (talk) 18:17, 9 February 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Sofa King

well I have seen both "we todd did" and "we taught it," so for you to assume that there is only one correct way to execute that joke is a mistake my friend. A tragic, tragic mistake.150.243.32.195 18:08, 19 February 2007 (UTC)

No. Only retarded people use "we todd did". The point of the joke is that "we taught it" is a valid English phrase. "We todd did" is not. At least try to understand a joke before assuming you know the proper way to execute it. --Kainaw (talk) 01:05, 20 February 2007 (UTC)

[edit] thanks

Hey Kainaw, you left a comment, answering my question, on the entertainment refernce desk, just thought i would drop by and say thanks as that is a pretty intelligent response, i would never have thought of the connection between 'now hear this' and 'hear ye' but now you have bought it to my attention it seems very logical, thanks again

[edit] Problems with a WikiTable

Here's the issue, though. Both James French Patton need to be placed in Seat 3 for the year 1882. That is why I had originally expanded the year 1882 to rowspan=4. It was required in order to place both names within the same year at the same seat. I have reverted user:mphamilton/Sandbox if you have any further suggestions. Thank you again. Mphamilton 18:05, 7 March 2007 (UTC)

OK. I'll try again... --Kainaw (talk) 18:24, 7 March 2007 (UTC)
But, if we do that, then Snyder no longer appears in 1882. He must be in 1882 (along with Patton) and then extend until 1890. I'm stumped. Maybe it's just not possible.Mphamilton 18:34, 7 March 2007 (UTC)
In my web browser, he is showing up in 1882. --Kainaw (talk) 18:37, 7 March 2007 (UTC)
In my web browser, Patton fills both lines of 1882. Two rowspans are showing for the year, but only Patton is appearing. Maybe it's an IE problem. I should check it on Mozilla. Mphamilton 18:41, 7 March 2007 (UTC)
Yep. It's an IE thing. --Kainaw (talk) 19:00, 7 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Studios Architecture

If you agree with me on Studios Architecture please look into the {{prod-2}} tag. — RevRagnarok Talk Contrib 18:51, 8 March 2007 (UTC)

I agree with the deletion. That's why I put the "test" on the page to give the author a bit of a fighting chance to keep the page. The prod-2 tag needs to have a link to the deletion discussion page. --Kainaw (talk) 18:55, 8 March 2007 (UTC)
There is no "deletion discussion" page with a {{prod}}. It's simply, "if one single person doesn't agree, they remove the tag." Then anybody can decide to AfD it if they wanted to, then there is a discussion. — RevRagnarok Talk Contrib 20:53, 8 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Pinyin

But in "Jieshi" the "j" in proununced as "q" and in Beijing as "j-ch" (heard proununce on articles Chiang Kai-shek and Beijing). --Vess 17:09, 5 May 2007 (UTC)

I don't know how you think a "q" is supposed to sound. Can you explain what you mean using the International Phonetic Alphabet? To me the realizations of the j's in Jiang Jieshi  sound more or less as I would expect from the phonetic description of the phoneme: an unaspirated "ch"-like sound.  --LambiamTalk 09:53, 6 May 2007 (UTC)
The difference between "j" and "q" is merely how much air you blow out while pronouncing them. It sounds practicly the same if you aren't used to listening to the difference. Personally, I'm always told that my q's sound too much like j's. So, I avoid speaking Chinese as much as possible. I stick to reading and writing. Vess' question does bring up an anomoly that I asked about a while back. The "i" in "shi" is pronounced by the Chinese I work with as "shr", not "shi". I asked why the "i" has two sounds. I was told that it has one sound. The Beijing accent changes "shi" to "shr". --Kainaw (talk) 12:44, 7 May 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Brad Pitt

Just read a bit of your user page and thought I'd ask... Do you actually know him then? I'm just curious and not a raving fan-boy or anything. Just part of my fascination with the six degrees of seperation theory/principle/whatever. Dismas|(talk) 19:29, 17 May 2007 (UTC)

I don't "know him" in the sense that the phrase implies. I saw him at family reunions, but he is a lot older than I am. So, he hung out with different cousins and such. I am positive that if I were to attempt to contact him, he wouldn't respond in any way. I know a lot of his (aunts, uncles, grandparents...) much more than I know him - and they have far more interesting stories. For example, at his great-grandmother's funeral, his grandmother was talking about how disappointed she was that Bradley only sent some flowers (as opposed to showing up). Then, feeling she was saying bad things about him, she tried to correct herself by saying, "I just love little Bradley to death. I only wish he wouldn't show his butt in all his movies." --Kainaw (talk) 12:04, 18 May 2007 (UTC)
Ha! Well, that's cool. Like I said, I was just curious. Dismas|(talk) 14:29, 18 May 2007 (UTC)

[edit] The 'problem with the people here'

Hey, I'd appreciate it if you didn't lump everyone together on the Ref Desk, as you've done with Wikipedia:Reference desk/Science#Burning sensation in throat. I'm not responding over there because I think there's been more than enough meta-discussion, but there's some background that you may not be familiar with.

I'm the person who did the analysis of questions on the Ref Desk a few months ago that looked at the issue of medical advice on the Desk. (We were attempting to get a handle on the size and nature of the problem.) I took a week's worth of questions, and extracted all the questions related to medicine for analysis. Of the twenty-one questions that could be read as relating to medicine, I would say that only three or four actually clearly sought medical advice (two or three more were in a gray area). So I'm not just people here and I'm certainly not making the assumption that any medical question is a medical advice request and must be met with "GO SEE A DOCTOR!!!". I also played a substantial role in developing the Ref Desk medical advice primer. It's designed to assist people in determining if a question sought medical advice and to help to avoid exactly the sort of paranoia that you're railing against.

I note that the particular question you replied to already had a few responses by the time that I got to it. Without fail, all of those responses had offered diagnoses for the original poster's condition, offering up 'acid reflux', 'dehydration', and a reaction to 'exhaust fumes'.

I'm a bit surprised by your Every wall in every waiting room is covered in pamphlets about every symptom you could imagine comment. In my experience, the pamphlets tend to be about specific disorders or specific treatments; while I cannot say that they don't exist, I don't recall seeing pamplets that encourage self-diagnosis. In any event, a waiting room is a bit of a different situation—the individual in question has clearly already chosen to seek professional medical advice at that point. Our hypothetical patient is already surrounded by medical professionals, and he's about to have an appointment with a physician.

Incidentally, please don't pull out the "I work in a hospital" line when you're not directly involved in patient care, diagnosis, or treatment. I work in a hospital too, and I'm also on the research side—I don't see patients until they're safely formalin fixed and presented to me on a slide. TenOfAllTrades(talk) 12:26, 15 June 2007 (UTC)

It appears to me that you read a lot into my comment that I did not say. I do not disagree with you. My point was that there are people here who want to remove encyclopedic discussion of medical issues as well as medical advice. For example, if I were ask if anyone has the latest AMA recommendations for BP control in diabetic patients, I'd surely get a "GO SEE A DOCTOR!!!" reply. Basically, I'm against tossing out the baby with the bathwater. --Kainaw (talk) 12:40, 15 June 2007 (UTC)
Perhaps it would have been best to take that stand on a question that wasn't seeking medical advice, then? I agree that there is some confusion around the issue, but I don't think that your response on the Ref Desk helped to clarify things. TenOfAllTrades(talk) 12:49, 15 June 2007 (UTC)
OK. I just posted a question that doesn't ask for medical advice. It asks for a factual "yes/no" answer. Let's see how long it takes to get the knee-jerk "DON'T ASK FOR MEDICAL ADVICE" response. --Kainaw (talk) 15:11, 20 June 2007 (UTC)
This appears to be a periodic problem. A user just asked what the bumps on the tongue are called (papillae in case you don't know). Another user deleted all responses to the question with a "DO NOT ASK FOR MEDICAL ADVICE" warning. -- kainaw 14:33, 1 November 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Notability of Cindy Luu

Hello, this is a message from an automated bot. A tag has been placed on Cindy Luu, by Brichcja (talk · contribs), another Wikipedia user, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. The tag claims that it should be speedily deleted because Cindy Luu seems to be about a person, group of people, band, club, company, or web content, but it does not indicate how or why the subject is notable: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, articles that do not assert the subject's importance or significance may be deleted at any time. Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as notable.

To contest the tagging and request that administrators wait before possibly deleting Cindy Luu, please affix the template {{hangon}} to the page, and put a note on its talk page. [edit] USA PATRIOT Act

Heya, I want to start fixing the main USA PATRIOT Act article. I was thinking of doing this in the following way:

  1. Create a background section. I'd just modify something I did in an earlier draft at Talk:USA PATRIOT Act/History#Background.
  2. Create a history section. I'm starting off a draft at User:Ta bu shi da yu/USA PATRIOT Act/History summary.
  3. Summarise each title of the Patriot Act. I have already documented each of the titles, except Title X.
  4. Write about how controversial it was, neutrally, of course :-)

What do you think?

Incidently, I have a research page. See User:Ta bu shi da yu/USA PATRIOT Act. - Ta bu shi da yu 13:06, 21 August 2007 (UTC)

I'll check your drafts. For the "controversy" area, I've considered, but haven't really asked for, a section that covers false controversy. For example, some idiot in a blog claims the Patriot Act was used to do an armed raid on an elementary school. It turns out to be false, but is used by others to sway opinion against the act. While worthwhile, I feel it is something better for Snopes to handle. -- Kainaw(what?) 14:29, 21 August 2007 (UTC)
I think we should keep that to significant controversy. :-) - Ta bu shi da yu 03:40, 22 August 2007 (UTC)

If you consider a link to the page discussing copyright tags to be unhelpful and a "you idiot" type reply, it is your problem. Others consider it helpful to be pointed to a page that contains the information they seek and do not feel insulted by it. -- Kainaw(what?) 18:31, 24 August 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Re: Trolls

I know other editors can be frustrating at times, but you generally should avoid calling other editors trolls, especially when you make it so easy to find out who you're talking about ^^;; Do what I do, when someone really gets on your nerves, get on Nexuiz, figure out who the stupidest person online is, and play with them like a cat does to a mouse. Or something equally cruel, anyway. --lucid 12:22, 28 August 2007 (UTC)

You are correct. I should have used a much older example - then it wouldn't be so easy to know who I was talking about. I guess I should correctly call him a hot-tempered editor with trollish tendencies. -- Kainaw(what?) 12:24, 28 August 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Use of "tm"

Kainaw, I notice that you use a TM (trademark) symbol in your signature (see e.g. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Reference_desk/Computing#Running_PHP_in_a_browser_without_installing_a_server). You may not be aware that if you have not paid the USPTO money to register a trademark, it is not legal for you to use that symbol. The purpose of the symbol is to warn others that they may not use the symbol themselves because it is legally registered with the USPTO. Hope this helps. David 10:53, 6 September 2007 (UTC)

You are assuming that "kainaw" is just some random username and not a trademark of Kainaw, Inc., a computer and internet services company. -- kainaw 11:54, 6 September 2007 (UTC)
I commented on David's page. --Nricardo 02:35, 7 September 2007 (UTC)
Cool. I should have known ™ doesn't require registration. I've had to register a few trademarks in the past. -- kainaw 13:13, 7 September 2007 (UTC)

I responded to Nricardo's comment on my talk page. To say that the use of TM doesn't require eventual registration would be incorrect. Yes, I am assuming that "Kainaw" is not actually a trademark of Kainaw, Inc. Most people don't use their name as their company name, although that is perfectly fine, of course. But, that is irrelevant, since "Kainaw" is being used in Wikipedia entries as a person's name, not a company's name. The use of "TM" in this context is cute, but incorrect and arguably illegal. Personally, I don't care. But I thought you might want to know. David 16:27, 8 September 2007 (UTC)

In truth™, it comes from the old BBS™ practice of extreme overuse™ of the trademark™ for no apparent reason™ (as this sentence demonstrates). Although, it is a trademark of Kainaw, Inc. (as is the arrowhead logo). Because I had the name first, I continue to use it. -- kainaw 18:47, 8 September 2007 (UTC)

[edit] WinCamXP's Message

Hey, WinCamXP here. I wanted to say that I am NOT TRYING TO HIDE WHAT I'VE DONE ON MY TALK PAGE! I JUST DON'T LIKE IT BEING MESSY!!!!! —Preceding unsigned comment added by WinCamXP (talkcontribs)

It is up to you. You've been told repeatedly to stop deleting comments on your talk page, yet you continue to do so and then complain when you are blocked. Hopefully you will grow up someday. -- kainaw 02:04, 20 September 2007 (UTC)

[edit] USA PATRIOT Act

Heya Kainaw... out of interest, what do you think of my rewrite? It took me two years... hope it's OK!

I have to say that I largely agree with you. It's amazing that so little numbers of people have actually read the Act, yet they still feel the urge to rubbish it/praise it! - Ta bu shi da yu 15:50, 10 November 2007 (UTC)

I forgot to mention that I read it. It is still so long. I don't know how to easily break it down further. My instinct is to have the main article only cover the bare facts: Who, What, When, Where, Why. Then, push all the controversy stuff to other articles. Of course, the majority appears to want the article to be replaced with one sentence: "Bush is evil and wants to eat your children." -- kainaw 18:01, 5 December 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Viruses during colder seasons

A recent discussion on the reference desk has brought up this article which sheds more light on why the flu is more prevailent during colder seasons. http://www.iht.com/articles/2007/12/05/healthscience/05flu.php#end_main

From a previous discussion you mentioned that cold and flu is more common during the winter because of children being in close proximity to each other. This article mentions that hypothesis, and also rebuttles it

"There was no shortage of hypotheses. Some said flu came in winter because people are indoors; and children are in school, crowded together, getting the flu and passing it on to their families."

""We know one of the largest factors is kids in school — most of the major epidemics are traced to children," said Dr. Jonathan McCullers, a flu researcher at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital in Memphis. "But that still does not explain wintertime. We don't see flu in September and October."

As for the crowding argument, McCullers said, "That never made sense." People work all year round and crowd into buses and subways and planes no matter what the season."

You may remember, I also made the same argument that people crowd into buses and subways no matter the seasons.

The article goes on to mention that it was discovered that the Flu virus can exist longer outside the body in the enviroment, if the temperature is cold and dry. Thought this might be helpful for your studies. 64.236.121.129 (talk) 17:44, 5 December 2007 (UTC)

Thanks. I saw that study submitted to the AMA for peer review a couple months ago. It should be under review by now. I would like to see how it looks after review. However, I really wish newspapers wouldn't publish papers as factual before they go to review - especially when the claim previous peer-reviewed research to be wrong. As Dr. McCullers claimed, most major epidemics are traced to children - usually to schools. Why not adults? Adults wash their hands more often and have less physical contact with fewer people than children. That is why so many healthcare professionals refer to children with names such as "germ-bag". -- kainaw 17:59, 5 December 2007 (UTC)
I definitely think children exacerbate the problem. It's a combination of many things. 64.236.121.129 (talk) 18:17, 5 December 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Burping

Hello. I'm a little concerned that your advice to the person who asked about burping is rather similar to coaching them to reword a request for medical advice to get past the system. I'm mentioning this on your talk page, as I don't want to drag metadiscussion about other people and the policies of the desk onto the desk itself. I'm bringing this up on the reference desk talk page, so you might want to check there. :) Skittle (talk) 18:13, 7 December 2007 (UTC)

I believe that I explained it well. The question was not a request for medical advice. The personal experience appended before the question confuses some people into thinking that the question is a request for medical advice. No matter what is written before (or after) the question, if the question itself is not a request for medical advice it is not a request for medical advice. That is the issue that I've been fighting for the last couple years. -- kainaw 18:20, 7 December 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Thanks for the "Bunnytown" Human info!

I just wanted to thank you for the additions to the Bunnytown page of the human characters. BTW, I heard Polly Frame, who plays Pinky Pinkerton, is coming to the USA in a modernized production of "MacBeth" starring Patrick Stewart this February in New York City. She plays one of the witches in this version IIRC. NoseNuggets (talk) 11:56 AM US EST Dec 9 2007. —Preceding comment was added at 16:55, 9 December 2007 (UTC)

Your welcome. My son loves the human parts of Bunnytown. He doesn't care for the bunnies though. -- kainaw 13:05, 10 December 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Suicidal Tendencies

You make perfect sense in your input on the is vs are section of Talk:Suicidal Tendencies. Im going to change it back to "is", if this User:Alex person changes it back, cant we report him for something?the juggreserection (talk) 14:46, 10 December 2007 (UTC)

Yes. You request arbitration to get more people involved in the decision. That doesn't mean they will side with you, but a larger group discussing the matter will usually result in a decision everyone can accept. See Wikipedia:Requests for Arbitration. -- kainaw 16:52, 10 December 2007 (UTC)
Isnt that more of a last resort? i think placing a tag on the page as you did is a better idea. and, based on the fact that User:Alex has stated that he has been blocked for an edit war on a previous user, and that he has a warning on his current talk page about edit wars, i believe that this person is very stubborn when it comes to editing.the juggreserection (talk) 21:04, 10 December 2007 (UTC)
Oops, the whole time i was using User:Alex when it should have been User:Alex 101. I should be slapped in the forehead.the juggreserection (talk) 17:24, 11 December 2007 (UTC)
