[edit] Languages of the European Union: A prolonged discussion over new member states data.

As there is an ongoing and rather prolonged discussion over some data about the new member states in Languages_of_the_European_Union#Language_skills_of_European_Union_citizens, please see the discussion in Talk:Languages_of_the_European_Union#2007_update and, as you have recently contributed to the article, you may want to add some comment. --Michkalas 20:26, 17 January 2007 (UTC)

[edit] EU official languages: One member, one language

On 6 September 2005, you have written in the article Languages of the European Union (see here) that:

There has been a suggestion in an official briefing that the implicit principle for official languages of the European Union is that each member state can put forward at most one official language ('one member state, one language'). This has not been confirmed in documents.

Is there some source for this? --Michkalas 16:49, 6 February 2007 (UTC)

I think I got that from the European Parliament post-briefing that day. I don't know whether this ever appeared in print. – Kaihsu 09:48, 7 February 2007 (UTC)

Dunno what's going on here - contribs doesn't tell much of a story, so deleted edits may be involved - so I'm deferring this one to you. The 6 month block length also struck me as strange, further enhancing my confusion. Cheers, Daniel.Bryant 00:19, 25 February 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Taiwan

Hello,

Regarding James Laidlaw Maxwell, Thomas Barclay, and George Leslie Mackay, why did you delete the reference to China? Just because Taiwan was occupied by the Japanese doesn't mean that the culture ceased to be Chinese. Only the Taiwanese nationalists of the modern era might wish it to be disassociated, but then as now it is widely recognized as part of China.Brian0324 18:11, 27 February 2007 (UTC)

[edit] European Council - Membership seniority

Hi, Just to let you know that I have made the table of members of European Council sortable and so I have removed the seniority column which you added a year ago (following a request from me) because sorting by the Member Since col will now give the same info without the maintenance headache.--Rye1967 14:16, 12 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Prod warning: Love Oxford

I have added a "{{prod}}" template to the article Love Oxford, suggesting that it be deleted according to the proposed deletion process. All contributions are appreciated, but I don't believe it satisfies Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, and I've explained why in the deletion notice (see also "What Wikipedia is not" and Wikipedia's deletion policy). You may contest the proposed deletion by removing the {{dated prod}} notice, but please explain why you disagree with the proposed deletion in your edit summary or on its talk page. Also, please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Even though removing the deletion notice will prevent deletion through the proposed deletion process, the article may still be deleted if it matches any of the speedy deletion criteria or it can be sent to Articles for Deletion, where it may be deleted if consensus to delete is reached. [edit] Churches in Amsterdam

Hello from Amsterdam, thanks a lot for renaming West Church to Westerkerk and for fixing the translation of the name! Could I ask you to please do the same for the Noorderkerk, Zuiderkerk, Oosterkerk, Nieuwe Kerk and Oudekerk? Thanks a lot in advance. Take care, Jvhertum.

Done. It was silly to insist on moving them to the "English names". – Kaihsu 08:47, 19 July 2007 (UTC)
Much obliged. Yes, it was just plain silly! Jvhertum 13:11, 19 July 2007 (UTC)

I spent much of my Saturday during my weekend in Amsterdam walking about looking for a church that still had a service on Sunday. Westerkerk was the only one I could find – perhaps I should have also tried Oude Kerk, but my impression was that it was not used for services regularly. I am glad that the Protestant Church in the Netherlands achieved its unity, but perhaps it was forced to do so in a numerically-declining climate.... – Kaihsu 14:07, 19 July 2007 (UTC)

Yes, we're not a church-going folk here ;) My mom goes to Sunday services at the English Church, which is very active (but mostly expats, he he). Anyway please take a look at Talk:Noorderkerk for continued discussion on this issue.... Thanks, Jvhertum 09:10, 20 July 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Otto Loewi's Nobel prize diploma

Did you take this picture of Otto Loewi's Nobel prize diploma at the Royal Society in London on 2004-04-20?

Yes.

LoewiNobel20040420CopyrightKaihsuTai.jpg

Someone has written on Otto Loewi's page that the diploma is in Graz, Austria. So I was wondering if the diploma was in London (at the time you took the picture) and has since then been moved to Austria, if it was in Austria the entire time, or if its still in London and the text about it being in Austria is nonsense. (Please reply here.) panda 21:19, 28 July 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Sun Yat Sen Memorial House

Hi, I'm the original creator for the above article & wld like to know why the name change & later revert of "Sun Ke" to "Sun Fo" (even with wiki-link to "Sun Fo" page) without prior edit comments or discussion on the article talkpage? I attended the "Dr. Sun Yat-Sen and Macau – A Photographic Commemoration on the Occasion of the 140th Anniversary of his Birth" & visited the Memorial House in Macau early this year to gather source information in writing this article. His name, "Sun Ke" was commonly referred in Macau as recorded by Macau History Association which i use its material as my reference. That's why I used "Sun Ke" & reverted it to its nomenclature in the context of my article. -- Aldwinteo 09:10, 30 July 2007 (UTC)

[edit] License tagging for Image:Cellulite.jpg

Thanks for uploading Image:Cellulite.jpg. Wikipedia gets thousands of images uploaded every day, and in order to verify that the images can be legally used on Wikipedia, the source and copyright status must be indicated. Images need to have an image tag applied to the image description page indicating the copyright status of the image. This uniform and easy-to-understand method of indicating the license status allows potential re-users of the images to know what they are allowed to do with the images.

For more information on using images, see the following pages:

[edit] Fair use rationale for Image:Her Majesty's Government.gif

Thanks for uploading or contributing to Image:Her Majesty's Government.gif. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is not a suitable explanation or rationale as to why each specific use in Wikipedia constitutes fair use. Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free media lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Chris Btalkcontribs 17:07, 9 September 2007 (UTC)

Hello, you recently removed the speedy deletion tag on the abovementioned image and inserted a license tag whilst claiming fair use. Please note that a license tag per se does not constitute a claim of fair use nor does the addition of the sentence "Argued fair use (fair dealing) to illustrate a frequently-seen government logo in encyclopaedia articles". Wikipedia requires that the Non-free content criteria are met in order to use copyrighted images without the copyright holder's consent. I will give you a chance to have a look at the mandatory components of a fair use claim and add a proper fair use rationale before I re-tag the image for speedy deletion. Likewise, you will also need to state the source so the copyright status can be verified by others. Thanks, -- Chris Btalkcontribs 20:28, 9 September 2007 (UTC)

I hope this issue is resolved now. – Kaihsu 13:26, 11 September 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Cần Thơ Bridge

I have moved Cần Thơ Bridge back to Can Tho Bridge. Naming conventions prefer that English, Latin characters are in the title of articles (see Wikipedia:Naming conventions (use English)). — Moe ε 17:41, 29 September 2007 (UTC)

No, that is not a latin character and that is not the naming conventions of the these cities and providences unless you get consensus to change them. — Moe ε 19:33, 29 September 2007 (UTC)

The statement ‘that is not a latin character’ is not correct. But I can do without a revert war in my life, so I will let this one pass. – Kaihsu 19:56, 29 September 2007 (UTC)

Well, most of them were Latin except "ầ" and "ơ", which are vietnamese language vowels. — Moe ε 20:06, 29 September 2007 (UTC)

In the Latin alphabet article: "With the age of colonialism and Christian proselytism, the [Latin] alphabet was spread overseas, and applied to Amerindian, Indigenous Australian, Austronesian, Vietnamese, Malay and Indonesian languages." "Vietnam, under French rule, adapted the Latin alphabet for use with the Vietnamese language, which had previously used Chinese characters." In the article Vietnamese: "Writing system: Nôm, Latin alphabet (quốc ngữ)" "The Vietnamese writing system in use today is an adapted version of the Latin alphabet, with additional diacritics for tones and certain letters." "Presently, the written language uses the Vietnamese alphabet (quốc ngữ or "national script", literally "national language"), based on the Latin alphabet." In the page Category:Alphabetic writing systems, there is no such entry as "Vietnamese alphabet" or "vietnamese language vowels". – Kaihsu 22:36, 29 September 2007 (UTC)

Exactly, you just said it. The Vietnamese writing system in use today is an adapted version of the Latin alphabet, with additional diacritics for tones and certain letters. Emphasis mine. An adapted version of the Latin alphabet isn't the Latin alphabet, which is what the naming convention is speaking of. and ơ (with the diacritics) are not part of the Latin alphabet. — Moe ε 23:51, 29 September 2007 (UTC)
Oh, and have you not heard of the Vietnamese alphabet? — Moe ε 00:04, 30 September 2007 (UTC)

I don’t think I can convince you, but see Latin characters in Unicode, alphabets derived from the Latin, and Category:Latin-derived alphabets (a subcategory of Category:Alphabetic writing systems via Category:Latin alphabet which includes English alphabet, Italian alphabet, Romanian alphabet, and Vietnamese alphabet). By your logic, the two major modern languages most closely related to Latin (Italian and Romanian) do not use the Latin alphabet (since they also use diacritics such as à and ș), but only English does. And in that English, words like ‘blessèd’, ‘Brontë’, ‘naïve’, and ‘encyclopædia’ don’t exist. This edit of yours has been referred to the Supreme Bean Council. – Kaihsu 07:48, 30 September 2007 (UTC)

You misinterpret what I said. I didn't say that they don't exist, I didn't say they weren't Latin alphabets or Latin letters, I said they weren't the Latin alphabet the naming convention mentions of. I believe the Latin alphabet the naming convention is speaking of is here. And I think the correct page your looking for is WP:POINT, not WP:BEANS, which reverting an edit which adds it to a correct category, is. Did you honestly assert that the Vietnamese alphabet isn't a Alphabetic writing system? Anyways, if you want naming conventions for an entire country to change, I would suggest going to the Vietnamese WikiProject and getting the consensus you need, because your not getting it here arguing with one individual, who disagrees with you. — Moe ε 16:04, 30 September 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Replaceable fair use Image:Map_taiwan.jpg

Replaceable fair use

Thanks for uploading Image:Map_taiwan.jpg. I noticed the 'image' page specifies that the image is being used under fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails our first fair use criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed image could reasonably be found or created that provides substantially the same information. If you believe this image is not replaceable, please:

  1. Go to the image description page and edit it to add {{di-replaceable fair use disputed}}, without deleting the original Replaceable fair use template.
  2. On the image discussion page, write the reason why this image is not replaceable at all.

Alternatively, you can also choose to replace the fair use image by finding a freely licensed image of its subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or a similar) image under a free license, or by taking a picture of it yourself.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified how these images fully satisfy our fair use criteria. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that even if you follow steps 1 and 2 above, fair use images which could be replaced by free-licensed alternatives will be deleted 2 days after this notification (7 days if not used in an article), per our Fair Use policy. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Calliopejen1 13:48, 3 October 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Copyright on userpage

We have been discussing your user page on the administrator noticeboard, see this. It seems that you cannot retroactively copyright your user page, because when you click "save page" you agreed to license your contribution under the GFDL, so the copyright notice isn't technically accurate. Would it be a big issue if you removed it? Thanks for your consideration, and I welcome you to comment further at the discussion thread on WP:AN.-Andrew c [talk] 00:57, 17 October 2007 (UTC)

Also, please note that asserting "moral rights" is not consistent with the GFDL, which requires that modification without limitation or permission be allowed. "Moral rights" generally forbid this and are incompatible with this requirement.Seraphimblade Talk to me 07:33, 17 October 2007 (UTC)

A couple of notes: First, the GFDL does not affect copyright. Indeed, it's only the fact that Kaishu holds copyright that allows the GFDL to be enforced. If there were no copyright, then anyone could take Kaishu's stuff and sell it as part of a document that could not be copied.

The "moral rights" question is less clear -- I generally oppose such claims, GFDL or no -- but I'd point out that all Kaishu is saying is that he asserts moral rights. That's a true statement. Whether he can enforce them or not is quite another matter; I would hope he couldn't. --Trovatore 07:40, 17 October 2007 (UTC)

You are quite correct on that note. However, the copyright notice is still redundant and not required—one holds the copyright to something the moment it is fixed in a tangible form, just as I hold the copyright to this particular comment the moment I press save, fixing it to a tangible form (a database entry). Of course, by choosing to make the entry here, I agree that this copyrighted material will be released under the terms of the GFDL. Since this is my original work, I can make that licensing agreement, and do so the moment I press save. That means, however, that among other things, I agree to allow without limit copying and modification of this work, provided that those who copy and/or modify it comply with the GFDL's terms. I cannot claim rights incompatible with that, as I cannot simultaneously claim to release my work under a certain license and not to do so. The condition of saving one's edit here is that one allows everything permitted under the GFDL. If one is unwilling to allow this, one should never save the edit. I have had this kind of discussion around Wikimedia projects several times, and each time the conclusion was that I cannot license under GFDL (or cc-by-sa) without asserting my copyright on the work in the first place (either implicitly, as many other contributors do; or explicitly, as I do on my user page). The first sentence of section 1 of GFDL speaks of ‘the copyright holder’, which refers to me when the work is my original contribution (not Wikimedia or Free Software Foundation). (In fact, by including the copyright notice, I am simply following the instructions included with GFDL.)

Licensing under GFDL is not the same as donating into the public domain, which I also do from time to time with specific works on Wikimedia projects.

I assert my moral rights on the work only to make the defence of GFDL (by the ‘community’, whatever that means) stronger. (For example, in the case that someone contravenes the GFDL terms by copying Wikipedia content without crediting the contributors.)

The notice I put on my user page, therefore, is done in good faith and with a correct understanding of the licences (GFDL and cc-by-sa). Objections to that notice, I am sad to say, is based on an unclear understanding of the licences. – Kaihsu 10:30, 17 October 2007 (UTC)

Thanks for clearing it up, I think that would work fine. Perhaps to avoid future misunderstandings, you could add something explicit to the copyright notice, such as "I license my work under the GNU Free Documentation License and assert these rights within the context of such licensing?" Thanks for your consideration. I already added a note yesterday. (I might add that I aim to assert my rights unlimitedly, then license generously. Remember that I am free to re-license my original works under other licensing terms to other parties – which I have also done.) – Kaihsu 10:14, 18 October 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Image:Europäisches Parlament in Brüssel.jpg

Hi. do you remember me? we worked together on that image you made. We had little problems because i did the upload and i would really like it if you could upload the image under new name so that i am not longer the uploader, but it is the author (the way it should be). I would do the rest. It would really be nice :) Forrester (talk) 11:17, 15 December 2007 (UTC)
