Howzit, my friends!
OK, since you're probably wondering, yep my name, Kaihoku, is Hawaiian. Kai is my preferred shortened form of Kaihoku. Kai means "the ocean", which I love. "Hoku" means the stars, so I'm 'Star of the Sea'. There's a cool story as to how I got my name... ask and I'll tell you.
Please pardon the casual tone; since we try to be letter-perfect in Wikipedia articles, I thought I might be a little looser here. And no, I'm not trying to turn this into a "Personals" page. Just thought you might like to know what perspective I'm coming from.
I'm a 4th generation denizen of Los Angeles and was born in the Westdale - Mar Vista area (near Santa Monica). When I was 9 we then moved to the hills of Northridge, CA in the San Fernando Valley. Then, at 19 I spent several years in Portugal (western Europe) as a volunteer teacher.
I've also lived in... Houston, Texas; Salt Lake City, Utah, San Francisco and the Silicon Valley area. Currently, I live in Los Feliz near Griffith Park, currently restoring an old 1920's Spanish mini-mansion, and also in Hawai'i on O'ahu in the Kāne'ohe Bay area. I'm going back to school, and will likely attend Hawaii Pacific University in Honolulu.
I'm a big supporter of equal marraige rights for ALL people, regardless of orientation. I also support gay pride and will rally against anyone who might bring down gay folk or ANY minority.
Yeah "brah", I LOVE HAWAII... Not just the incredible beauty, but the people, the pace, the sun, the wilds, the culture, all of it.
I'm of Irish, German, English, Dutch, Cherokee and Hawaiian ancestry (in about that order. I've been fortunate to have already traveled somewhat abroad and have also seen most of the western United States. I am currently single and I have a dog. I have been a writer and editor, a teacher, an insurance agent, and I currently own a design business (interior design, exterior re-design and landscaping). I enjoy hiking and otherwise enjoying the outdoors, lifting weights, good food, loving my family & friends, and fighting for the underdog.
Links to some of my interests:
Culture of Hawaii
Hawaiian sovereignty movement (I hold fairly moderate views)
Marriage Equality
Science of mind (Religious Science)
Global Warming
Environmental Movement
And in spite of my stubborn opinions, I've been told that I'm one heck of a nice, balanced guy... you be the judge!
Aloha kakou!
