Kairo (Superman/Aquaman Hour)
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Kairo (sometimes spelled Cairo or Kyro) is the alien sidekick of DC Comics' Silver Age Green Lantern Hal Jordan, as featured in the 1967 Filmation animated series The Superman/Aquaman Hour of Adventure. The character was voiced by Ted Knight.
Created solely for the The Superman/Aquaman Hour of Adventure, Kairo has never appeared in a DC Comics publication. He is featured in all the Green Lantern shorts made during the show's short run, and helped him take down villains like Evil Star, Orc, and Sirena. Kairo was created as a replacement for Tom "Pieface" Kalmaku, Hal Jordan's comics sidekick, because "Pieface" was a racial slur and might have offended viewers.[citation needed]
The Green Lantern Kai-ro, later featured in the series Batman Beyond (1999) and Justice League Unlimited (2004) is named after Kairo.
[edit] Character history
Described as "Green Lantern's Venusian helper", young Kairo followed Hal Jordan (who he refers to as "Boss") across the galaxy assisting him in any way he could, despite having no powers of his own. Though a true backstory is never given for his character, he is apparently from Venus and met Jordan during one of his adventures, and is one of the few people on Earth to know his dual identity. Something of a mechanic, he helps repair a number of Jordan's devices like his plane, and on one occasion fixed his lantern battery by hitting it. He has no way of maneuvering through space on his own, so he rides on Jordan's back through the cosmos.
