Kai Leung

Kai Leung, (born March 20, 1958) the Master Instructor (Shihan) of the Shotojuku Dojo, holds advanced ranking in both Shotokan Karate and Goju-ryu Karate. Shihan Leung with the help of his teacher, Master Toyotaro Miyazaki, founded the Miyazaki Dojo in Astoria NY in 1982. He is a founding member of the International Shotokai Federation and current Chief Instructor. Shihan Leung has countless accolades over the past four decades include top ten ranking by Karate Illustrated Magazine in 1982 and the all American Open Championships in 1984.


Shihan Kai Leung started training in the martial arts in 1964, obtained his black belt in 1967, and began formally teaching in the early 70's. He quickly became a karate tournament champion and widely recognized expert in self defense. Shihan Leung has taught Shotokan karate-do for Master Toyotaro Miyazaki for many years, establishing himself as Master Miyazaki's highest ranking disciple and most well known instructor. Since the early 1970's, Shihan Leung had been involved in teaching Martial Arts to others. Shihan Leung originally started teaching in Manhattan and later moved to Queens New York. He began teaching at his high school karate club, becoming the president and head instructor. He later taught at Long Island University's karate instructor certificate program for more than fifteen years. From 1976 to 1978, he founded and instructed at the Whitestone Dojo. From 1978 to 1982, he became the assistant instructor for Master Toyotaro Miyazaki's Tokutai Dojo in Flushing New York. Shihan Leung is the highest ranked instructor and disciple of Master Miyazaki.

[edit] Shotojuku Dojo

In 1982, Shihan Kai Leung was sent by Master Miyazaki to head the Miyazaki Dojo in Astoria, now known as the Shotojuku Dojo. The Shotojuku Dojo has produced over 300 certified black belts. The Shotojuku dojo is also famous for producing well known Tournament Champions like Steve Tank, Ken Hadzovic, Gene Dunn, James Luk, Doug Pelinkovic, and Kassandra Cruz to name a few. In addition to producing champions from the community, Shotojuku dojo is also home to many International Champions such as Edna Lima, Antonio Pinto, Mostafa Elrakabawy, Adel Elbehiry and many more.

Also recognized as a tournament official and promoter, Shihan Leung has repeatedly been invited to judged events nationwide, including the Ozawa's Traditional Karate International Championships in Las Vegas and the Miyagi Chogun World Karate Championships. He also officiates at the AAU, USAKF, and USANKF national championships. For his efforts, Shihan Leung was awarded a class “A " referee licensed by the AAU National Karate-do Federation and was the technical chairman of the USA National Karate-do Federation of New York, in addition to many other awards and titles. He is considered one of the most respected judges in the field.

Shihan Leung’s commitment as an instructor has brought him to teach at a number of colleges, including the karate instructor's certificate program at (L.I.U.) Long Island University. He has taught at L.I.U. for more than fifteen years.

Shihan Leung is well known and recognized as one of the leading experts and scholar of martial art history. He co-authored the text book Karate (Martial Art and Sport) with Doctor Milorad Stricevic.
