Kai Kaus was an eleventh-century ruler of several provinces on the south shore of the Caspian Sea. He created a guidebook for princes called Scientific Physiognomy and the Purchase of Slaves. In it he sugguests the qualities a buyer should look for in purchasing both black and white and male and female slaves.
