Kafabindünya

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Kafabindünya is a post-rock, drone-metal, noise-rock band from Istanbul, Turkey.

The band is famous in underground scene because of their "hypnotic" live shows and shocking high volume. The band composes and plays instrumental music. According to the songwriter/guitarist Burç Tuncer, ordinary songs with lyrics limit the story that the listener imagines, by the lyrics of the songs. kafabindünya composes because they want the listener to imagine his/her own story and use their music as the soundtrack of their own fiction, by just limiting the edges of their imagination with -only- the names of the songs.

In 2006, the band opened the phonem by miller festival as the support band of Mogwai. The band continues to play live locally.

All in all, "kafabindünya" is now an art project, more than an avant-garde band. Sometimes they produce visual material in harmony with their audible material. Their live shows are like not only a rock band performing in the stage, but also an experience awaiting you to experiment.

[edit] History

Burç Tuncer started his musical life with guitar at the age of 12. But later he decided to play drums in a grunge band, and he formed Sleeping Vaccines, who were then had a local fame in the underground music scene of Istanbul. Years later he decided to return playing guitar and piano to fulfill his hunger of composing music. Always feeling closer to the "music without vocals", he recorded a home-made demo called "öcü" (which had several versions published in Istanbul and Ankara separately) which got some attention from avant-garde scene in Istanbul. "öcü" was an extraordinary demo, sometimes depressing, sometimes funny and sometimes head-banging. He heard the demo of the band Ayyuka which has an "abnormal aesthetical taste" that Burç liked, while bringing some "öcü" CDs to the local music store. Later they got in touch online and became close friends with Ayyuka drummer Alican Tezer but somehow they lost contacts. Studying to enter the fine arts academy, he suspended his music career for a year or so.

By that time Burç discovered the Japanese post-rock band Mono accidentally(!) in a music festival and felt like he was always waiting to hear this kind of music. Shocked by the genre, he decided to reincarnate his longtime-dead project "kafabindünya", this time as a band. His close friends guitarist Aybars Turan and drummer Mert Susur joined the band and they started ("pointlessly and deliciously" as stated by Burç) to jam along. Sometime later another close friend Özgür Can joined the band as a bassist. The band met Replikas, an avant-garde rock band from Istanbul to share experiences and learn about the subculture of extra-ordinary music. This meeting gave the band a new point of view to have trust in their music and get over the mood of "playing unacceptably noisy and over-ambient music". The quintet played together at small shows and some university festivals. Then the band decided to split up because of some musical and personal problems.

In lately 2004, a member of the band DDR (which is also an avant-garde band in Istanbul) requested Burç to play with non-existing band kafabindünya in an organization with 2 bands: Change of plans (another post-rock band from Istanbul) and DDR. Thrilled by this opportunity, Burç decides to re-unite the band with close friends Deniz Yoldüz on drums, Deniz's friend Kağan Yavuz on bass, and an old mutual friend of Deniz and Burç, Onur Balaban (who played with Deniz in another band called Oldskin years ago) on guitars. Urgently rehearsing the old songs, the band had a nice show and decided to move on.

Orçun Baştürk (still the drummer of Replikas and the drummer of kafabindünya today) was in that show too and loved the music of "kafabindünya". Orçun introduced the band to Peyote, which is a pub that has the role of "being the hometown of extra-ordinary bands and artist" and the band started to play at Peyote. Peyote sessions grew the band noticeably famous in underground music scene of Istanbul. After some shows they split their roads with the drummer Deniz Yoldüz and the bassist Kağan Yavuz and they were replaced by Berkan Tunçludemir (also bassist of Change of plans) and (first-temporarily, later permanently) Orçun Baştürk (also drummer of Replikas). Writing new songs and playing lots of shows as time passes, bassist Berkan Tunçludemir was replaced by Emrah Bekdikli, who gave the band a fresh breath with his playing style and character. These days kafabindünya also featured a "realtime visual artist" Gökçe Erverdi for live shows. Playing as a "solid" band for a time, a stressful era for the band began. Some musical and personal problems existing in the band silently, driven Burç to make a choice between "suspending his musical career" and "going on with different members". He chose to suspend the band and have a non-musical career for a while. But later encouraged by close friends and heartening of people, he decides to choose the second choice, replacing members.

Guitarist Onur Balaban and visual artist Gökçe Erverdi were parted from the band and Emrah Bekdikli left the band with his own decision. This era was a fly on the wall to the joining and leaving of the former-kafabindünya bassist Özgür Can, who were then replaced by Selçuk Artut, who was the bandmate of Orçun in Replikas. This relief of Burç turned out to be a creative-season to write a lot of new songs with the same basic identity of the band, without any limits. Quickly gathering strength, kafabindünya started to play shows again, reuniting with ex-kafabindünya guitarist Aybars Turan. The band found its long awaited peace nowadays.
