KAEF is a television station in Eureka, California (licensed to Arcata). The station runs programming from the ABC network. KAEF is a full-power television station that operates with 141 kw of power and is owned by Bluestone Television.

KAEF began broadcasting on August 1, 1987 as KREQ. Before, ABC programming was carried in part by stations KVIQ and KIEM in addition to their primary affiliations with NBC and CBS, respectively. In addition, local cable systems offered Redding ABC affiliate KRCR-TV on cable. KRCR, KAEF, and KFWU had secondary FOX affiliations until KCVU became a FOX affiliate in 1992 and KBVU signed on in 1995.

KAEF is a satellite of KRCR. However, it has its own branding, commercial inserts, and pre-empts local news, except for News Channel 7 Daybreak and a 5-minute weather report at 11pm before Extra. There are also few programming variants, generally to take into account the lack of local news, as well as programming rights held by other Eureka stations.

The Eureka television market is the only TV market in California currently not available on either Dish Network or DirecTV.

[edit] Digital Television

The station's digital channel mirrors KRCR's digital channel:

After the analog television shutdown and digital conversion, which is tentatively scheduled to take place on February 17, 2009, KAEF will remain on its current pre-transition channel number, 22. However, through the use of PSIP, digital television receivers will display KAEF's virtual channel as 23.

KAEF's digital signal, along with all the other digital signals in Eureka are not available on Suddenlink Digital Cable, but the analog signal is available on cable channel 7. Dish Network and DirecTV do not carry both the analog and digital signals for the Eureka market.
