IMDb profile

Kadhalan is a successful Tamil language film released in 1994, directed by S. Shankar. The film's score and soundtrack are composed by A. R. Rahman. Written by S. Shankar and Balakumaran, the film stars Prabhu Deva, and Nagma in lead roles. Kadhalan was a huge commercial success upon release. It was later dubbed into Hindi as Humse Hai Muqabla (Challenge Against Us) but flopped at the box office in that language despite a massively popular soundtrack primarily because it was in direct competition with the year's biggest Hindi hit Raja.

With well received performances from a cast that also included Girish Karnad and Raghuvaran, this film displayed actor/dancer Prabhu Deva's dance moves and acting which, along with the direction, comedy by Vadivelu and music, were hugely popular aspects of the movie. It featured a popular madras bashai song - named "Pettai Rap" - which was written in a rap-like style, interspersing Tamil with English words. It won the Filmfare Best Movie Award South in the year of its release.

[edit] Plot

Popular collegian, and the chairman in his Chennai college, Prabhu (Prabhu Deva), is asked by the Principal to invite the Governor of Tamil Nadu, Kakarlal Sathyanaryanamoorthy (Girish Karnad), to be the chief guest on the annual day of the college. When he goes to invite Kakarlal, he bumps into his lovely daughter, Shruthi (Nagma), and instantly falls in love with her. She too subsequently gets to meet him, and falls in love with him. Since there is considerable fear of terrorism in the state, Kakarlal does not permit his daughter to travel anywhere without bodyguards. On one occasion, she does manage to give them the slip and runs away with Prabhu at a dance festival. Shortly thereafter there is a threat of a bomb being planted there, Shruthi is immediately returned home, and Prabhu is arrested. Shruthi is forbidden to see Prabhu again, while Prabhu is released from police custody, after being beaten severely, he goes to meet Shruthi, unaware of the changed circumstances, and this is where he will find evidence that will lead him to a hideout of a daredevil terrorist Mallikarjuna (Raghuvaran) who is the mastermind of bomb blasts, and joins forces with Kakarlal for killing innocent people. The question is that, will Prabhu be a victim or a victor, forms the rest of the story.
