Traverse Gap

Thank you for creating the article on the Traverse Gap. I wrote about this portage two years ago in Kensington Runestone#Geography. I did not even know it had a name, I had to do original research based on maps and satellite photos. It seems that North Americans generally do not know about this resource or its economic potential, rivaling that of the Chicago Portage. In theory it would be possible to make the Red River of the North and the Minnesota River navigable, and build a canal across the Gap. (If this gap was in the Soviet Union, it would have been covered by 50 to 100 feet of navigable water.) The ice should not be a problem; we have the Saimaa Canal above the 60th latitude and the White Sea Canal reaching the Arctic Ocean.

Have there ever been any plans to build a canal across the gap? -- Petri Krohn 00:29, 14 May 2007 (UTC)

User:Peschomd Sockpuppetry Case

Thanks for the help/evidence on the case. It was the first one I've ever started.  :) This Peschomd guy messaged me on MySpace right after I added warnings on his original page and even tried to be my friend. Maybe he was hoping I would retract the warnings and give him free reign to spam or something. Anyways, thanks again! Wyatt Riot 13:24, 27 May 2007 (UTC)

As an update, I'm sure you've noticed that we "won" the case, if that's the appropriate way to put it. I also got his websites banned from all Wikimedia projects, so we shouldn't have to put up with his spamming any longer! Wyatt Riot 23:36, 1 June 2007 (UTC)

Big Bang

It was very rude of you to revert my thoughtful changes to the big bang creationism article. Please be kind enough to refrain from such callous and ignorant acts in the future. There is not one single solitary scrap of evidence supporting big bang creationism any more than there is a single solitary scrap of evidence supporting Genesis creationism from the christian bible. Perhaps you're unfamiliar with science. Since this seems to be the case, let me help you. Scientific hypotheses are testable, and there is nothing testable about big bang creationism. It is an example of ex nihilo creationism and as such can not enter the realm of science. It will forever be a fantastical myth. Now if you'd be so kind as to stick to articles you are more qualified for (toilet sounds), you can leave the editing of science articles to those of us who understand what science is and practice it. Good luck in the future and many happy returns. Bubuntu 16:54, 27 May 2007 (UTC)

Thank you for your message. To restate: Sourced content in featured articles should not be removed without discussion, particulary where, as in Big Bang, you have essentially blanked the page. You have no edits whatsoever on the article's talk page. If you want to make changes of such magnitude to the article, discuss them there first. Also I have relocated your post on my talk page to the bottom, where it belongs. I will let its content stand for others to see. Kablammo 17:02, 27 May 2007 (UTC)

Geology of Minnesota

Hey K,

Thanks for your comments on my talk page and your work on the Minnesota Geology page. I don't claim to be an expert, but do know a little as it does happen to be my profession and locale and it would be regrettable if I didn't have at least a smidge of knowledge.... I plan to dash my smidges in, like snowflakes in September, until those who are more worthy brush them aside. It would certainly be nice if the experts (those professors, MGSers and Friends of the Pleistocene types) knew about wikipedia and decided to pitch in for the good of the uninitiated.

User:Zwgeem Zong Geem

Hi,

First, thank you very much for your great efforts for preventing vandalism.

I am Zong Geem who mostly updated Harmony search algorithm article with login or without login. But, the other day I found reference-needed sign. So, I provided 33 references that are strongly related with the Harmony Search algorithm (they are not just citing it but using the algorithm. If I provide conference papers and other materials, it will become more than 100. Also, there are many papers to come soon). Although the algorithm was invented in 2001, it is gathering popularity in various scientific and engineering fields during the short time span.

But, although I provided selected 28 journal papers and 5 book chapters, I still saw the reference-needed sign. So, I removed it. But, I found your warning of vandalism. Could you help me how to fix this situation?

Replied on your talk page. Kablammo 15:50, 13 June 2007 (UTC)

I have been busy with this article. You do serious MN articles, as I do serious IA articles. The article, at present dissolves into stupid stuff at the end, but my stuff at the top is approximately good. The past two days have been educational, learning things about all things glacial. Right now, I'm coping with the stuff that makes Fulton, Illinois a continental divide, inasmuch as this is the place that the Upper Mississippi River flows over bedrock. This is Whiteside County, Illinois. C.f. retrograde Apple River (Illinois). - User:Ace Telephone

On the I-35W page, you can just let the MiszaBot do its job

Although your Archive edits on Talk:I-35W Mississippi River bridge were useful, its more efficient to tweak the parameters to the MiszaBot and let it do the archiving for you. The reason it didn't run yesterday was that it was wrongly changed Archive back to page 1[2], but that was already well over its maximum size and it wasn't able to create a page 2 as it was already been created. I've now split the big page and fixed the parameters. Tonight, it should archive every thread that hasn't been touched in a day. -- KelleyCook 21:24, 6 August 2007 (UTC)

Help me out here

I need an answer to a question, so I went to the talk page for the USS Saratoga (CV-3)...and ya. So here goes-How did she sink? I mean, I know it was at the Bikini Atoll tests with an A-bomb in test Baker, but I've heard (NOT confirmed it) that she flew a half-mile out of the water! before taking 7 1/2 hours to go down. Just want to see if that is true, seeing as I can't find it ANYWHERE on the internet-all they say is that she sunk... Thanks for your help. the_ed17 23:54, 6 September 2007 (UTC)

I’m not sure of the answer to your question. There is a lot of information available on Operation Crossroads. The atomic tests at Bikini Atoll were filmed, and you can find film of the actual explosion. [3][ [4][5] I have never heard that the vessel was lifted out of the water; that seems very improbable, and the films do not show vessels being lifted up.[6] The explosion did create a half-mile wide column of water.
Saratoga did take hours to sink.[7] She rests on the bottom, and is easily accessible to SCUBA divers.[8][9] Many ships survived Able (an air blast) very well, but the underwater test of Baker sank many of them due to underwater damage. I read somewhere that is what sank the Arkansas (or was it Nevada?), and that her hull was smashed, but I don't remember where I saw that. Kablammo 00:45, 7 September 2007 (UTC)
I remembered where I saw the reference to Arkansas. Here's some more information on Crossroads, from Ireland, Bernard (1996). Jane's Battleships of the 20th Century. New York: HarperCollins, 186-87. ISBN 0 0047 0997 7. :
  • US capital ships present included Arkansas, New York, and Nevada in addition to Saratoga
  • The Able test (an air blast) did little damage to the armored citadel of Nevada only three ship lengths from ground zero
  • Baker involved a similar weapon detonated 90 feet below the surface (lagoon was only 31 fathoms deep max)
  • As explosion was underwater, the shock was transmitted directly to the hulls, without attenuation
  • column of water 1/2 mile wide (this is from another source) went 2500' into the air
  • A wave 94' high was measured 1000' away (you can see ships heeling from the wave in the videos)
  • Arkansas, 250 yards from center, was "crushed as if by a tremendous hammer blow from below"
There is also a book by Richard Rhodes entitled Dark Sun which contains information on these tests, but I don't believe Saratoga was specifically mentioned. (I no longer have the book.) Nothing I have seen mentions warships being thrown in the air, but the vaporization of much of the water in the atoll near ground zero, a 90'+ high wave, and most importantly the underwater shock wave, caused catastophic damage. I hope this helps. Kablammo 00:24, 8 September 2007 (UTC)
thanks for the trying at the VERY least! It was just random curiousity on my part, so thanks-it pretty much answered the Q. the_ed17 01:19, 8 September 2007 (UTC)
And it was the Arkansas that was sunk due to underwater damage becausethe tough old Nevada survived both tests--and then was sunk by naval gunfire. the_ed17 01:30, 8 September 2007 (UTC)

Leaf Mountains

My best resource, and the one I use most often, is a book called Minnesota Place Names, A Geographical Encyclopedia. It's published by the Minnesota Historical Society, which claims that it's the best book of its kind anywhere. It's pretty remarkable, compiled by a surveyor and geologist named Warren Upham between about 1910 and 1920, back when a lot of pioneers were still alive to tell the stories of the state. This book describes the Leaf Hills Moraines in Otter Tail County: "running southeast from Fergus Falls to the south line of the county and thence east and northeast to East Leaf Lake, a distance of 50 miles." These hills for the most part haven't been named, but are said to provide views of a three-county area. Do you think this is the range of hills you're describing? If so, I'll scrape together what resources I can find and put up a stub class article which others can improve.Spottacus 00:31, 8 September 2007 (UTC)

Okay, buddy. There's a start at Leaf Hills Moraines. I think that's a better, more accurate title than Leaf Mountains, though the latter should probably be redirected to this article. I probably won't write any more tonight, but I hope to get something written and slapped up there this weekend.Spottacus 00:48, 8 September 2007 (UTC)
Nice start. I'm eager to see what you come up with. I'll be watching.Spottacus 22:25, 8 September 2007 (UTC)

News flash - check out this illustration for the Leaf Mountains article: [10]Spottacus 20:21, 9 September 2007 (UTC)
And it's public, as it's from Upham's monograph. Kablammo 20:56, 9 September 2007 (UTC)
Have you noticed what CJLippert did for this article? I asked for his help with a related matter because he's well educated in the Ojibwa language, and he's gone through some of my old work, unasked, and made corrections to the Ojibwa versions of place names and Indian people. He's very good. Have you ever worked with him before? Spottacus 01:33, 11 September 2007 (UTC)
I have not, but his contributions are very good. They raise the standard of articles from interesting to actual scholarship. He may not realize the degree to which he will now be in demand! Kablammo 12:11, 11 September 2007 (UTC)

Your user ID...

...is as appropriate as any I can think of, to be editing subjects ranging from the Big Bang to the I-35W bridge collapse. To coin a phrase, it's dynamite. :) Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? 00:33, 8 September 2007 (UTC)

Thanks for the note-- I didn't know my contributions were that explosive! (But I did once provoke quite a response by an edit to Big Bang; see [11]) Maybe I'll go back to quieter subjects lest I get a reputation. Kablammo 00:41, 8 September 2007 (UTC)
That's pretty funny. A red-link user blanks the page and then gripes because you un-blanked it. That was his "parting shot", I guess, as he was permanently blocked later that same day. [12] Speaking of Big Bangs, I used to have a self-made user box that stated I believe in the Big Bang Theory. I changed it to point its illustration to a more specific target, which you can find under "VANDALISM" on my user page if you're interested. :) In fact, it occurred to me that the full-sized version of that picture would suit your user page just fine. :) Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? 00:57, 8 September 2007 (UTC)
So now you want me to have a user page?? How about this picture:[13] Kablammo 01:01, 8 September 2007 (UTC)
That's also a good illustration of the concept. You're not required to have a user page. In fact, your redirection from user page to user talk page follows the recommended procedure when you don't want a user page. I was just envisioning a user page filled with the image of something exploding... or perhaps something the opposite of that, for contrast. A little girl picking flowers, for example. Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? 01:06, 8 September 2007 (UTC)
Like Daisy (television advertisement)? Kinda ties the concepts together . . . Kablammo 01:09, 8 September 2007 (UTC)
Precisely. Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? 01:11, 8 September 2007 (UTC)

Red River Trails: surviving fragments

Kablammo, there are supposedly fragments of the trail still extant. I've run across signs or markers in Ramsey, Minnesota at a roadside rest area, in Breckenridge, Minnesota, and on the side of US Route 2 west of Grand Forks, North Dakota which claim that the trails are still there and visible to the naked eye. Do your resources mention these still-existing segments of trail? Would it be worthwhile to mention them? Spottacus 19:12, 9 September 2007 (UTC)

I think that would be a good idea. If you can add anything, feel free. I'd like to get this article "finished" and those would be good additions. (Maybe at the end of the End of the Trails section, either within it or after it.) Kablammo 19:15, 9 September 2007 (UTC)

Another name question . . .

Hi, Kablammo. You are the greatest, thank you for all your work on this article. I counted five chars over the requirement but yes it is close or a tad under depending on who counts how. The sentence you asked about is almost covered in the Hughes MPR article and could be reworded to match. I am wiped after sorting through the Cowles biographies and may not get back to this this morning but I can look later on. No I have not yet seen a bio. • Minnesota Economics (2006) published an article with a short bio. Re: whose work, no it really is not mine but it is becoming a sourced article thanks to you and others and closer to B class biography though it still needs help from someone who has studied economics for more than zero minutes. Thanks though. -Susanlesch 00:10, 17 October 2007 (UTC)

Manifest Destiny

I'd say go ahead and restore the material. I glanced at the user who deleted that stuff's contributions and concluded he wasn't a crackpot, so I didn't feel like delving any further into the dispute. But if that editor has a problem with the restoration, it can be worked out on the talk page, as it should have been before it was removed. Yes, I hate when the schoolkids are studying the American West--Oregon Trail is another popular target, though it's Sacagawea who's getting the worst of it lately. I had that article semi-protected again recently. The problem with all the petty vandalism is legit content goes missing and nobody notices for months. I'm still backtracking through the edit history of Sacagawea to find some content that went missing months ago and I don't know yet if it's from a rewrite or because it got vandalized and some well-meaning person deleted it. Gosh I hate when people don't check the page history before deleting vandalism! Anyway, yes, you might see about page protection. Keep up the good work! Katr67 23:25, 18 October 2007 (UTC)

Notable Noyes Hall?

Help me out here. What makes this notable? Is every building on the NRHP named after a non-notable former institutional employee happen to be notable? There are dozens of such buildings in that town and more on that campus alone, so it is not unique. It isn't even mentioned on that school's own page, perhaps the best place for a list of its "notable" buildings. If it does belong on the Faribault page, shouldn't it be under a heading other than "institutions" since it doesn't happen to be one? Perhaps under "historic structures" or attached to the deaf school listing on that page? I'm curious, what am I missing here? Vespid 03:53, 5 November 2007 (UTC)

While the standard of notability for mention in an article is not the same as the standard for a stand-alone article,[14] I restored it because of the NRHP listing; there have been a number of articles listed for AfD which have survived because of that listing. (I'll invite someone active with NRHP properties to comment here as well.) As you mentioned, Faribault, Minnesota is rich in such sites, which are a distinguishing feature of the community.
Either of your suggestions for placement within the article are fine and I agree with where you've put it. Kablammo 08:11, 5 November 2007 (UTC)
I revised the wording within the main Faribault article, but I think mention of the buildings would be more appropriate within the Minnesota State Academies article. The institution also contains another building listed on the National Register, the Administration Building/Girls' Dormitory. On the other side of Highway 60, the School for the Blind contains an NRHP building, and the State School for the Feeble-Minded has a hospital building listed on the National Register. Three buildings at Shattuck-St. Mary's are listed on the National Register as well. I think listing the individual buildings under their institutions' articles would make it easier to give a more detailed account of their construction and notability, as opposed to doing it in the main Faribault article. The Faribault article could get rather long if details of all the historic buildings (and there are quite a few!) were mentioned. As an aside, I think I might have to go down to Faribault and Northfield this weekend for an NRHP photo tour -- even though I haven't finished Red Wing and Chaska yet. --Elkman (Elkspeak) 14:33, 5 November 2007 (UTC)
I will defer to you two on that. Thanks for your input. Kablammo 14:37, 5 November 2007 (UTC)
Also, as far as National Register articles in general are concerned, the general consensus is that any building listed on the National Register is notable enough for a Wikipedia article. The National Register listing process involves a comprehensive nomination form submitted to the National Park Service, and the NPS reviews the submission to make sure it actually fits the criteria. That doesn't necessarily that we have to write one article separately for each NRHP property -- for example, I wrote one article to cover Cuyuna Iron Range Municipally-Owned Elevated Metal Water Tanks, the name of the Multiple Property Submission, even though each tower is separately listed on the National Register. --Elkman (Elkspeak) 14:41, 5 November 2007 (UTC)
