Major General K M Shafiullah (Bir Uttam) was the Second in Command of Second East Bengal Regiment that revolted with 6 officer on the night of March 25, 1971. He was also the Chief of the S-force of the Independence War in Bangladesh.
AKM Shafiullah was one of Sector Commander of 11 sectors. He was the commander of Sector 3. His sector was mainly the opposite of Sylhet. Sector's areas were Dhaka, Mymensingh, Sylhet and parts of Comilla (present Brahmanbaria district). Later beside these 11 sector there was 3 special forces. Forces got their name by the commanders names' first letter.
He brought his full force under S-force. Later as he got busy to organize his S-force, from September ’71 Sector 3’s chief was Major A.N.M Nuruzzaman. After the end of Independence War of 1971, Bangladesh government assigned Shafiullah as the Chief of staff of Bangladesh Army. He was the the chief of staff till the military coup of 15th august 1975. For his bravery in 1971’s independence war he was given Bir Uttam Award with the other Sector Commanders of 11 Sectors.
