KK Nagar (shortened from Kalaignar Karunanidhi Nagar) (originally called 'K. Kamaraj Nagar' but it was renamed during the DMK regime in late 1960s[citation needed]) is a small township located in the southern part of Chennai, India. This is situated west of Ashok Nagar and nearest airport is around 5 km south of this place. KK Nagar was a locality developed in the 1970s and early 1980s. KK Nagar is roughly 5 km² in area. KK Nagar is organized by sectors and streets, and there are 14 sectors, and around 120 streets.

The major landmarks of KK Nagar, beginning East to West, include: Kamaraj Salai, Sivan Park (on P. T. Rajan Salai), Pillaiyar kovil, Saravana Bhavan (opposite KK Nagar bus stand), Double Tank, Padma Seshadri Bala Bhavan (on Alagirisamy Salai), Amman Kovil(temple), M.G.R Nagar, Ayyappan Kovil(temple), Pondicherry Guest house, and Nesappakkam.

Major schools in the area include Padma Seshadri Bala Bhavan (PSBB) Senior Secondary School, Sri Krishnaswamy Matriculation Higher Secondary School (also known as M.A.K School), Springfield Matriculation, Avichi High School, and Thai Satya High School.

Restaurants: Major eateries in the area include Saravana Bhavan, Bombay chat, Data Udipi Hotel, Hotchips, Matta Fast Food. There are also plenty of smaller shops which serve fast food and snacks. Bismi Biryani Center, Indian Fast Food(on a caravan), Thalappakattu Biriyani shop, Anjugam Foods, MKS Fast food are a few fast foods here.

Chennai city, one of the four metropolitan cities of India, has tourist destinations and attractions. Chennai city has cosmopolitan and Tamil culture. KK Nagar is one of the many places inhabited by this cosmopolitan society. The region is one of the few planned townships in the city.

KK Nagar primarily represents a planned residential area. The region is spread as a rectangular landmass with traversing roads running through the region. The locality has a number of apartments inhabited by the people living in this part of the city. The entire region consists of 12 blocks, from 1 to 14 otherwise called Sectors. In addition to these, there are nearly 100 streets distributed across the 14 sectors. The divisions are marked by straight roads running from north to south and from east to west of the region.

The Sivan Park located in the premises of KK Nagar is remarkable. The park is one of the few, well maintained and lush land area in the middle of the city. The park features many beautiful lawns and nicely laid out sidewalks. The park reflects a clean and green environment amidst the busy metropolis.

There are quite a number of services and facilities providers in the suburb precincts. The region with all its resources is one of the ideal places if one has to reside in the Chennai city. Apartments, schools, local markets, hospitals and easy access to the city are some common features of the place.

KK Nagar region is connected by roads with other important regions of the city. The 2nd Avenue on the north east corner of the planned locality leads to the city center. One has to travel a good 8 km to reach the Chennai Central (George Town) from the said place. Mambalam Railway Station is the nearest to the place. The railway station is a couple of kilometres and towards the south east of the place. Chennai Airport lies to the south of the KK Nagar and about 6 km from the place.

[edit] Munusamy Salai

This is the street running between Nesappakkam at one end and leading to Vadapalani/Virugambakkam at the other. It runs to approximately one kilometre. Pondicherry House is a major landmark in this street. A number of banks - SBI, ICICI (this ATM was notoriously popular for beating the queues in the bank branches!), UTI, IDBI - have put up their ATMs in this street. The Nesappakkam branch of Indian Overseas Bank is in this street, towards the Virugambakkam/Vadapalani end. Opposite to IOB is a PTC bus depot, within which is a ticket printing press of the PTC is present. Nowadays, the RTA also conducts its two-wheeler driving test inside the premises. Gothis' Sunil Apartments is one of the oldest residential complex over looking the ICICI Bank ATM.

  • The first branch of the now famous Hotel Saravana Bhavan was started here in K.K.Nagar.
  • After the bomb blasts in Uttar Pradesh on 23rd September, there was another mail circulated in the internet, claiming K.K.Nagar to be a potential terrorist target. The mail claimed explosions would go off on November 30th, which led to panic and the closure of the major schools in the area. They were later found to be hoax.
