K25GI is a low power television station in Amarillo, Texas, broadcasting locally on UHF channel 25 as an owned-and-operated satellite repeater for the Trinity Broadcasting Network (TBN).
[edit] History
On February 21, 1992, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) granted to National Minority Television a construction permit to build K20DM, a low-power television station on UHF channel 20 to serve Amarillo. From the beginning, it was intended to be a repeater of KTBN-TV, flagship of the Trinity Broadcasting Network. The board of directors of National Minority Television was headed by Rev. Dr. E. V. Hill, a prominent African-American pastor from Los Angeles, California, and included Paul and Jan Crouch, president and vice-president, respectively, of TBN. After several extensions of the construction permit, the station began broadcasting under Program Test Authority in February 1995, and was licensed by the FCC on June 25, 1995.
In 1997, the FCC released digital companion channel assignments for full-service television stations. KAMR-TV was assigned UHF channel 19, meaning that K20DM would forced to either accept interference from the adjacent digital station, or move to another channel. The station filed an application to move to UHF channel 25 and was granted a construction permit on May 3, 1999. In January 2002, the station began broadcasting on its new channel under Program Test Authority, and on March 21, 2002, was licensed as K25GI.
Upon Dr. Hill's death on February 24, 2003, control of National Minority Television passed to the surviving board members, with Jane Duff, an African-American woman, as president.
On March 30, 2006, the station was granted a construction permit to convert operations to digital television. Upon completion, the station will "flash cut" to digital, meaning that it will turn off its analog broadcast and begin digital transmission on the same channel. At that time, the station will also begin broadcasting at 15 kW, the maximum power allowed for a low-power digital station, giving it a significant increase in coverage area.
[edit] Programming
K25GI is a full-time retransmitter of the TBN satellite feed and produces no local programming. After conversion to digital, the station will broadcast the TBN multicast, with TBN on DT1, The Church Channel on DT2, JCTV on DT3, TBN Enlace USA on DT4, and Smile of a Child on DT5.
