[edit] Homonyms
Kōan may refer to:
- Kōan (Kamakura period) (貞元), Japanese era from 1278 to 1288
- Kōan (Muromachi period) (承元), Japanese era from 1361 to 1362
This set of nengō used to be identified as
- Koan (first) (貞元), Japanese era from 1278 to 1288
- Koan (second) (承元), Japanese era from 1361 to 1362
It was suggested that the period designations would be clearer; and the same pattern seemed useful in the cases of other homonym pairs in the list of Japanese era names:
* 976_ 貞元 |Jōgen (976 - 978) * 1046 永承 |Eishō (1046 - 1053) * 1099 康和 |Kōwa (1099 - 1104) * 1131 天承 |Tenshō (1131 - 1132) * 1142 康治 |Kōji (1142 - 1144) * 1207 承元 |Jōgen (1207 - 1211) * 1222 貞応 |Jōō (1222 - 1224) * 1278 弘安 |Kōan (1278 - 1288) --> [Kōan (Kamakura period)] * 1312 正和 |Shōwa (1312 - 1317) * 1361 康安 |Kōan (1361 - 1362) ---> [Kōan (Muromachi period)] * 1381 弘和 |Kōwa (1381 - 1383) * 1504 永正 |Eishō (1504 - 1521) * 1555 弘治 |Kōji (1555 - 1558) * 1573 天正 |Tenshō (1573 - 1592) * 1652 承応 |Jōō (1652 - 1655) * 1926 昭和 |Shōwa (1926 - 1989)
