Personal Information

  • Hello and welcome to Jza84's user page.
  • I live in Greater Manchester and my interests are geography, geneaology, politics and the contemporary visual arts.
  • I have been contributing to the English language Wikipedia since December 2005 (first as an anon, then under a different username).
  • I was granted administrator status on 21 May 2008.
  • I mainly contributute to articles related to the WikiProjects I participate with, particularly (but by no means exclusive to) local and national geography.
  • A lover of consistency across articles, my personal aims include producing outstanding articles about places and things important to me and my life, and encourage a greater ethos of teamwork at Wikipedia.
  • Amongst other things, I'm currently working on getting each place in Greater Manchester and Northern England to have a lead photograph (static image) dipicting the local landscape or a local landmark in the infobox. My favourites so far have included Audenshaw, Barnsley, Hattersley, Ancoats, Dalton-in-Furness, Middleton, Hulme and Bollington.

Achievements I'm proud of

I've significantly contributed to a number of featured and good articles, particularly:

Oldham
Oldham is a large town in Greater Manchester, England. It lies amongst the Pennines on elevated ground between the rivers Irk and Medlock, 6.9 miles (11.1 km) northeast of the city of Manchester, and 5.3 miles (8.5 km) south-southeast of Rochdale. Oldham rose to prominence during the 19th century as an international centre of textile manufacture, becoming "one of the most important centres of cotton and textile industries in England".

Shaw and Crompton
Shaw and Crompton is a town and civil parish within the Metropolitan Borough of Oldham, in Greater Manchester, England. Historically a part of Lancashire, Shaw and Crompton rose to prominence during the Industrial Revolution as a major centre of cotton spinning and textile manufacturing in the 19th century. According to the national press, it had more millionaires per capita at its zenith than any other town in the world.

Manchester
Manchester is a city and metropolitan borough of Greater Manchester, England. The City of Manchester metropolitan borough, which has city status, has a population of 452,000. Manchester lies at the centre of the wider Greater Manchester Urban Area which has a population of 2,240,230, the United Kingdom's third largest conurbation.

Today's featured article: 2 April 2008
Neilston
Neilston is a village in East Renfrewshire, Scotland. It lies in the Levern Valley, 2 miles (3.2 km) southwest of Barrhead, 3.8 miles (6.1 km) south of Paisley, and 10 miles (16.1 km) southwest of Glasgow. It is known primarily as a former but important milling village and parish.

Peterloo Massacre
The Peterloo Massacre occurred on 16 August 1819 when cavalry were ordered to charge into a crowd peacefully protesting for parliamentary reform. It resulted in the deaths of 15 and injuries to 600–700 men women and children. The event was largely discounted by the authorities, although it has recently been described as Manchester's Tiananmen Square, and an event in the history of the United Kingdom most in need of a proper memorial.

I am also very proud of the following:
