[edit] Plot
Michael Cromwell (Tim Allen) is a self-absorbed, successful commodities broker living in New York City. Wanting to marry his new fiancée Charlotte (Lolita Davidovich), he needs to obtain a final divorce from his first wife, Patricia (JoBeth Williams), who left him some years earlier. Patricia now lives with a semi-westernised tribe in the Amazon jungle. Cromwell travels there to get her signature on divorce papers, but, upon arriving, discovers he has a 13-year-old son, Mimi-Siku (Sam Huntington).
Cromwell attempts to bond with Mimi-Siku in his brief stay with the tribe, but against his protests, is coerced into bringing Mimi-Siku back with him to New York so he can "prove himself a man" (his tribe's chief gave him the rites of passage test of getting fire from the Statue of Liberty). Mimi-Siku wears traditional dress during much of his stay in New York. As Cromwell attempts to adapt Mimi-Siku to city life, cross-cultural misunderstandings occur when Mimi-Siku reverts to customs considered acceptable by his tribe.
Mimi-Siku and the daughter, Karen (Leelee Sobieski), of Cromwell's partner, Richard Kempster (Martin Short), fall in love. They engage in a short romance which causes distress for Richard, who fears Mimi-Siku may influence her negatively. The pair sleep together in a hammock, but apparently do not become sexually involved. Eventually, Mimi-Siku, Kempster's family and Cromwell succeed in defeating a gang of Russian mobsters (leader played by David Ogden Stiers) intent on maiming Kempster (incorrectly thinking he has cheated him on a business deal). This event brings the families together and allays the Kempster's fears regarding Mimi-Siku's nature.
Shortly after this event, Mimi-Siku returns to the Amazon jungle, disheartened with his separation from Karen and his inability to obtain "real fire" from the Statue of Liberty.
Shortly after his return, however, Cromwell and Kempster's family join him there for a vacation. It's also implied that Mimi-Siku's and Karen's teen romance resumes.

[edit] Remake
Jungle 2 Jungle is an American remake of the successful French movie Un indien dans la ville ('An Indian in the city). The plot follows the original fairly closely, except that the original was set in Paris rather than New York, and Mimi-Siku climbed the Eiffel Tower rather than the Statue of Liberty.
