[edit] Julie Bertagna

Any help expanding this page would be very much appreciated. Especially with book plots. Calineed 00:27, 15 February 2007 (UTC)

I wandered over here after your comment on the Springfield, Illinois page and saw your request for help via here and your user page. I'm all about helping out newer users, you are newer right? So here goes. Usually I have this "style" to peer reviews when I do them at Wikipedia:Peer review, so I will just adhere to that.

I am just going to kind of list what I noticed and what I changed.

[edit] References

  • While the external link method in text is okay there is a preferred method (for which you can, but don't have to, use citation templates. I have changed up your refs, the article now has a references section which displays footnotes.
  • Your second citation (here) does not support the statement about the Scottish Arts Council Award, I removed it and add the {{fact}} tag, so you will know it needs a citation.
  • In general try to avoid external links in the body of the text, they should be in the 'External links' section, which you have and pared down as much as possible to the most relevant and pertinent links. I removed some and cleaned up the rest.
  • Your third external link/citation, in the intro, does not support the statement it follows (about the 2nd highest award for a children's author) but it does support the sentence before it that I commented on above. Changes reflect this.
  • Your fourth external link/citation (here) was too ambiguous to be useful. I removed it and placed the another citation needed, try to follow the forms in the other refs I cleaned up.

[edit] Other Stuff

  • I removed this sentence: and the Eco Trust Best Scottish Books of 21st century and the sequel Zenith.{{fact|date=February 2007}} and dropped it here, with its citation tag, it needs a ref and was too awkward for me to make out what it was saying.
  • The list in the works section is too long and has too much bold, I added the cleanup tag.

Hope this helps. I am not trying to be overly harsh or anything, just trying to help. : )A mcmurray 17:17, 20 February 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Replies

Thanks, I'll get straight on to updating that :)
Some comments: 'Your second citation (here) does not support the statement about the Scottish Arts Council Award' - It does include this information but not nearly clearly enough (near bottom of page) so I'll search for another clearer one. (sorry, forgot you used the one after.)
'Your third external link/citation, in the intro, does not support the statement it follows (about the 2nd highest award for a children's author)' - It supports both as it does mention that it was the second highest for a children's author in Scotland. Again, I could try to find a better link if necessary. Calineed 17:33, 20 February 2007 (UTC)
Yeah I missed it I guess. I put in the refs and added another in her biography, trying to avoid her personal site but I used two citations for the degree because the Higham site just said Glasgow U. and her site specified the degree. I doubt she is unreliable as a source per Wikipedia:Reliable sources for that assertion of fact. The Scottish Arts Council site isn't at all clear but it doesn't matter much since the other ref supported the assertion.A mcmurray

[edit] Clean-up of article

I think that I have cleared-up the references (except the one about her making up stories since she was 7, which I deleted).
I also got rid of all the bold text in the works section. I'm not sure how to shorten it but I guess I could add more information about each book to make it less 'list-like'?—Preceding unsigned comment added by Calineed (talkcontribs)
What I would do is just talk about her key works. Her first, her latest and the biggest ones in between, convert all that to cited prose. Then with the titles that are left (as long as it's not over say 7 or 8) could be put into a list just before the refs section 'Other works' or something like that. Oh and you could actually drop all the publisher information and use the ISBN numbers, which I don't know a lot about but seems to be the preferred method on Wikipedia when dealing with that info, check out the questions section on that template I put on your talk page or see Wikipedia:ISBN.A mcmurray 18:17, 20 February 2007 (UTC)
Thanks, I'm doing a rough layout along those lines at the moment. It will take a little while so I'm just leaving this one up at the moment. Calineed 20:30, 20 February 2007 (UTC)
Article looks much nicer than it did, of course, it needs expansion, but a lot of The Wiki does. It's well cited, which is not a quality a very large percentage of the articles here share. Many have references but lack inline citations, which makes the sources kind of amibiguous and makes it difficult to verify the information. That or the sources are just plain unreliable. Anyway just thought I would check it out and see how things were coming. If you need any other help just let me know.A mcmurray 17:41, 22 February 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Photo

This page also needs at least a picture of the author. Calineed 10:39, 15 February 2007 (UTC)

A book signing would be a good place to take one, probably would be difficult to find a free use one other wise unless someone has one out there with a Creative Commons license or something.A mcmurray 18:19, 20 February 2007 (UTC)
I have sent a message to someone who has taken a photo of Bertagna requesting permission to use it. It'd be really good to have a photo and I think that this one is actually one of the best there is. Calineed 23:07, 20 February 2007 (UTC)
Make sure they authorize use under a free license and not just for Wikipedia otherwise we can't use it.A mcmurray 00:30, 21 February 2007 (UTC)
Yeah, sure. I've sent them a message based on the template I found on Wikipedia. It should be okay. Calineed 12:20, 21 February 2007 (UTC)
Most excellent.A mcmurray 13:00, 21 February 2007 (UTC)
Actually the copyright holder doesn't want to release it for commercial use. Is there any way to do it without commercial use? Calineed 17:40, 22 February 2007 (UTC)
Like creative Commons? Is that allowed on Wikipedia? Calineed 12:01, 23 February 2007 (UTC)
It depends on which CC license it is, it has to allow commercial use because Wikipedia's content is freely reproducible including for commercial use. : ) Fair use only applies in certain specific instances, such as if the subject is dead or demolished. In the United States federal government works are Public domain, I don't know about the United Kingdom though. Hope that helps.A mcmurray 05:53, 25 February 2007 (UTC)
Well, he won't allow commercial use I don't think so that's out of the question. I haven't found any information about booksignings etc I could get a picture of Bertagna at either. I have got a few of her books that I could photograph, would that be against copyright? Calineed 15:41, 28 February 2007 (UTC)

[edit] TV series for children

This site provides information about a TV programme in the UK (aired on FIVE) based on Bertagna's book, 'The Ice Cream Machine'. I don't know exactly where to put this on the page, maybe in a section after the works section? Calineed 12:12, 23 February 2007 (UTC)

I went ahead and tried to write an outline. Calineed 15:38, 28 February 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Synopsis

The synopsis of the books/TV series needs to be expanded. I'll get round to it when I'm not as busy. Calineed 15:38, 28 February 2007 (UTC)
