- 1836 – Canada's first railway, the Champlain and St. Lawrence Railroad, is opened.
- 1877 – Baltimore and Ohio Railroad workers in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, stage a sympathy strike for the workers killed in Baltimore, Maryland, the day before. Rioting erupts throughout Pittsburgh as a result.

- 1904 – The Trans-Siberian railway is completed.
- 1971 – A fast train from Basel to Copenhagen derails due to a technical failure in the Class 103 engine; 23 die and 121 are injured.
- 2000 – Manchester Metrolink, in Manchester, England, is extended to Eccles.

- 2001 – Four passenger cars on the Mangalore Mail commuter train heading for Chennai derail while crossing the Kadalundi River near Calicut, India, killing 57 people. See: Kadalundi River rail disaster.
- 2003 – A tornado knocks down most of the former Erie Railroad's Kinzua Bridge.[1]
- 2005 – A second series of explosions occur on the London Underground just two weeks after the previous attacks
- 2005 – Union Pacific 844, the last steam locomotive built for Union Pacific Railroad, makes a series of break-in runs after the most extensive overhaul of an operating steam locomotive in the United States since the 1950s.[2][3]
- 2005 Pennsylvania Governor Edward G. Rendell presides over and cuts the ribbon for the opening ceremony on Buffalo and Pittsburgh Railroad's new branch to Homer City, Pennsylvania.[4]
