[edit] Biography
[edit] Tokyo Soundsystem and solo projects
Julius Ylitalo started his work as a musician more seriously in 2004 when he met fellow producer Patric Craft. Ylitalo played Craft some songs he had written earlier and the two started writing new material, most notably the song "Superlative" which was later released on the Tokyo Soundsystem album "Illegal Promotion", with Patric Craft credited as co-producer. The duo wrote a handful of songs, of which only a few were ever released. Some remixes were also produced, but they were later renamed as Tokyo Soundsystem or simply Julius Ylitalo remixes. Chris & Craft then announced they would not be working together in a while, as they would both be focusing on different projects.
Shortly after Ylitalo departed with Craft he met Ilmari Perälä, and Tokyo Soundsystem was born. However, it was not until the summer of 2005 when Tokyo Soundsystem's debut album was to be released. The album introduced heavy sampling, and was cancelled by ftrd music group because the samples could not be cleared due to monetary problems; thus, the album was named "Illegal Promotion". Singles "Superlative" (featuring Patric Craft) and "Amsterdam" were released online, as they were the only songs on the album that were entirely written by Ylitalo and Perälä. The album was then offered for download online, and Tokyo Soundsystem returned to the studio to work on some material that would not rely on samples as much as earlier productions.
The new single, "I Don't Care" was released in 2006 with b-side "Syndrome", and was promised to be followed by an EP, but was instead succeeded by a remix of Brandtson's "Nobody Dances Anymore". Shortly after the release Ylitalo announced that Tokyo Soundsystem had come to an end and would not be active in the future. However, in 2007 Ylitalo announced that Tokyo Soundsystem is back together and is working on material for Ylitalo's solo album, but also planning a TSS album. The new album, also titled Illegal Promotion was announced in early 2008 after the first single "Whatever!" was made available in Ylitalo's MySpace. A new version of "I Don't Care" was uploaded to MySpace in February.
Julius Ylitalo announced his first solo album in late 2006. The album, "Too Glam to DJ", was supposed to be released sometime in the summer of 2007 but was pushed by Ylitalo himself to 2008. Two singles have been released so far; "Elité/Disco Scene" and "The Get Go/Neva Eva", however only Elité is to be featured on the album. In September 2007 Ylitalo released his remix of the Scandinavian Music Group song "Säälittävä syksy", that was eventually sent to Joel Melasniemi who liked it. Ylitalo later announced that the remix would be featured on Too Glam to DJ. In addition to Scandinavian Music Group, other guest artists include Ilmari Perälä of Tokyo Soundsystem, Patric Craft and Finnish rap duo Herkkupojat. The album is also rumored to feature the song "Stuntin" that borrows vocals from the Lil Wayne track "Stuntin' Like My Daddy". The song can be listened online at Julius Ylitalo's MySpace.
In early 2008 Ylitalo announced that "Too Glam to DJ" was put on hold and he is now focusing on the new Tokyo Soundsystem album.[1]
[edit] Current projects
Ylitalo recently hooked up with fellow Finn Mikael Montonen to form a hiphop-focused production team Superweekend. The two are currently in-house producers for their own record label ftrd music. He has said that most of his solo projects and other projects are cancelled so he is able to fully focus on his label. Herkkupojat is the only project that has remained active, apart from Superweekend.
[edit] ftrd music
Julius Ylitalo recently announced he would be taking a break from music production for a while to take time to set up a label with Mikael Montonen, also known from Superweekend. Not much information concerning the label has yet been made public but some have speculated that Ylitalo and Montonen have already signed some artists. Though nothing is official yet, Ylitalo and Montonen have confirmed that future artists include Herkkupojat and Linda Kohvakka, to mention a few.
