Julius West Middle School

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Julius West Middle School is an International Baccalaureate - Middle Years Programme. It is located at 651 Great Falls Road Rockville, Maryland. Julius West Middle School was built on the land of farmer Julius West. He willed his farm to the city of Rockville to build a school on his land after his death. The student body of 1908 students is 87.4% White, 6 % Asian, 1% African American, .9% Hispanic, and .7% American Indian, and 1.2% European. 29.4% of the students receive free/reduced price lunches. Julius West was officially made an International Baccalaureate World School in July, 2003, when it was allowed to implement the Middle Years Programme (MYP) curriculum. This program is mandatory to all students who attend Julius West. The MYP stresses "life long learning," "critical thinking," and "responsible global citizenship." Upon graduation, students attend Richard Montgomery High School, a school which also maintains an International Baccalaureate (IB) program. Students are given a choice of four "paths" to take. There is a Pre-IB path, with 100 spots available for students from all over Montgomery County, an IB/MYP path which offers MYP classes to any JW student, an MYP diploma upon completion of the program in 10th grade, and, upon 11th grade, 25 spots to enter the IB path, an Honors/AP course, which provides above-grade level classes (AP generally starting at Junior year), and a College/Career Preparatory path which teaches skills to enter into the workforce or college.
