Julius Erasmus Hilgard

Julius Erasmus Hilgard (1825-91) was an American engineer. He was born in Zweibrücken, Rhenish Bavaria, went to Illinois in 1835, studied engineering, and was employed in the Coast Survey office. During the American Civil War he served the Union army and navy by the construction of maps and charts and by surveys as well as by tidal and other information. In 1872 he was one of the members of the International Metric Commission at Paris and was made a member of the permanent committee. In 1875 he was president of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and from 1881 to 1885 superintendent of the United States Coast Survey.
