Juliet Wheldon

Dame Juliet Louise Wheldon, DCB, QC, formerly HM Procurator General, formerly Treasury Solicitor, Head of the Government Legal Service, was appointed Chief Legal Adviser and Adviser to the Governor of the Bank of England since 1 August 2006.
She was called to the Bar (Gray’s Inn) in 1975. She joined the Treasury Solicitor’s Department as one of the lawyers advising HMT in 1976 and was HMT’s Legal Adviser between 1984-86. In 1983-84 and 1986-87 she was seconded to the Attorney General’s Office which is the clearing house for difficult legal issues within Government.
Miss Wheldon returned to the Treasury Solicitor’s Department from 1987-89 and then to the Attorney General’s Office from 1989-97. In 1997-2000 she was the Legal Adviser to the Home Office. From July 2000-July 2006 Miss Wheldon was the Treasury Solicitor and Head of the Government Legal Service (GLS).
A Londoner, she is also a patron of the Human Rights Lawyers’ Association.
