Julia Emilia Valdés Borrero

Julia Emilia Valdés Borrero (born February 26, 1952 in Santiago de Cuba, Cuba) is a Cuban artist specializing in painting, drawing, engraving, and illustration.

From 1967 to 1972, she studied in the Escuela Nacional de Arte (ENA), in Havana, Cuba. Between 1984 and 1989 she studied Art History, in the Universidad de Oriente, in Santiago de Cuba, Cuba.

Among her must relevant personal exhibitions we can quote Músicos y Palmas, in Pequeño Salón, Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes, Havana, Cuba, in 1982. In 1989 she presented Exposition Peintures de Choy, Julia Valdés, Manuel Pozo, in the 2e Festival de Culture Cubaine Bordeaux, in the Centre Culturel de Cestas, Bordeaux, in France. In 1993 she made Paintings. Julia Valdés/Alberto Lescay, in Galerie ACUD, in Berlin, Germany. In 1996 she presented Día Imaginario. Julia Valdés Borrero, in Galería El Louvre, in the Hotel Inglaterra, in Havana, Cuba. And in 1998 she exhibited De máscaras y otras imágenes. Julia Valdés, in Galería de Arte Universal, in Santiago de Cuba, Cuba.

She was part of many collective eexhibitions, among them we can mention De otra isla. Muesta colectiva de pintores cubanos, in the Museo de Arte Moderno de Santo Domingo, Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, 1992. In 1993 she was one of the selected artists to conform Neve Cubanische Malerel (Six Cuban Fine Artists), in Galerie Kunstinder Scheune, Vendershein, Dessan, Speyer, in Germany. In 1994 some of her works were selected to conform Arte de Cuba, in Fundació Josep Comaposada, Barcelona, Spain. In 1995 she participated in the 1er. Salón de Arte Cubano Contemporáneo, in the Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes, Havana, Cuba.

During her life she had obtained many awards an d recognitions, among them we can mention the Prize at the Salón Nacional de Profesores e Instructores de Artes Plásticas, Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes, Havana, Cuba, in 1973. In 1979 she also gained the Prize in the Concurso Nacional de Vitrales, for the Consejo de Estado, Havana, Cuba. In 1980 she obtained the Prize in Painting, at the VIII Salón Nacional Juvenil de Artes Plásticas, Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes, in Havana, Cuba. In 1981 she gained theFirst Prize in Drawing, in the Salón Homenaje al 467 Aniversario de la Fundación de la Ciudad, Galería Oriente, Santiago de Cuba, Cuba. And in 1989 she was awarded of the Prize in Illustration, in the Concurso Nacional "El Arte del Libro" [for illustrations of the book Cuentos de la vida y la muerte], in Havana, Cuba.
