Juhan Kallaste

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Juhan Kallaste (birth name Johan Kree[1][2]; December 19, 1891 Paistu Parish[3], Holstre[4] or Paistu[5]August 28, 1999 Viljandi) was an Estonian cleric and actor who is held to have been the oldest ever Estonian male person known. He lived 107 years and seven months. Before his death he also was the oldest person known in Estonia. Since he changed his name in 1935 and there were claims that he was six year younger but made himself older to avoid mobilisation during the World War II, for some time during his lifetime Anna Jürnas was held to be the oldest living person in Estonia (she did become the oldest after Kallaste's death). However, Kallaste's birth was verified by the church registration book. [6][7] Kallaste's age has not been validated by any international body.

When 12, he went to school in Pirmastu and he studied there for three years.

The Lutheran archbishop made him a Deacon. He was a vicar at Paistu, Kõpu, and Viljandi St Paul's congregation and an assistant cleric at Laiuse and Tarvastu congregations.[8] He buried 5254 people, the first of them at the age of 15.[9][10]

Juhan Kallaste also worked as a joke teller and an actor in the theatre Ugala.

He was married for some time but had no children.

A couple of years before his death, he remembered his biography in details. He spent his last years in a home for aged people in Viljandi.[11]For his laste two weeks he lied in bed but was not in pain. He had not walked around for a long time but went to toilet himself some months before his death. [12]
